Getting to Koh Chang Island from Bangkok. How to get to Chang

Koh Chang Islandpopular resort in Thailand, located approximately 315 km southeast of Bangkok. Despite the fact that package tourists, who are brought in batches from Pattaya, like to relax here, the island of Koh Chang is also very popular among independent travelers.

How to get to Koh Chang from Bangkok on your own? What are the ways? How long will it take to travel, what is the cost? I will answer these questions in this article.

2. You can also go directly from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Koh Chang. on a minibus from the same company bussuvarnabhumikohchang.com/lonely-beach-express-bus.html. The minibus departs from Bangkok Airport to 9:30, 11:00 and 14:00 and will take you directly to Lonely Beach on Koh Chang. IN reverse direction minibass are sent to 7:00, 9:00, 17:00 and 19:00. The total travel time from the airport to the beach on Chang is 6-7 hours. The fare is 600 baht one way and 900 baht round trip.

Tickets cannot be booked in advance! Tickets for the minibus can be purchased at the airport on the ground floor near gate No. 8.

3. Another way to go towards Koh Chang from the airport, or rather from airport bus station Bus Terminal Suvarnabhumi International Airport- take one of the passing buses , which go to Trat from Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal (they all stop at the airport bus station) or Government Bus 999, which departs from Ekkamai directly to Laemngop Pier.

See the bus schedule from the bus stations above and add about half an hour to an hour for the journey from the bus stations to the airport. The bus fare is 265 – 275 baht. There are free buses running all the way to the airport bus station - white shuttle buses.

By taxi, hotel transfer, rented car in Koh Chang

If your finances allow you, or you are in a hurry, or traveling with children or a large group, you can get to Koh Chang by taxi or order a transfer at the hotel in advance.

To order a taxi in advance, you can use this service. Checked - the prices are quite reasonable!

You can take a taxi at the airport or arrange it on the street or at your hotel in Bangkok. The cost of a taxi to the ferry is 2500-3500 baht, to the hotel on Koh Chang 4000-6000 baht (the taxi is loaded onto the ferry with you). This is the price for a standard car that can fit 3 people. For a large company you will have to order a minivan. Transfer from the hotel usually costs more - 5,000 - 10,000 baht. Travel time to the pier is 3 – 4 hours, to the hotel on Chang is about 5 hours.

You can rent a car (we use this most often) and go by car to Koh Chang. There are two roads from Bangkok to the piers - both 310 km long. You can leave Bangkok

  • along Highway 3, then turn onto Highway 344, and after passing Ban Bung turn again onto Highway 3
  • along the road which is an extension of Rama IX, Srinikarin road. This road connects to Highway 344, which must be followed to Trat as described above.

By plane from Bangkok to Koh Chang

You cannot fly to Koh Chang Island itself by plane, you can fly to Trat airport. Currently, only one airline flies to Trat, Bangkok Air. On at the moment it makes 3 flights a day from Bangkok: 8:20, 11:40, 17:00. From Trat to Bangkok at 10:00, 13:00 and 18:30. The flight time is only 1 hour, the cost of a one-way ticket is from 2650 baht. Buy plane tickets >>

From Trat Airport you can take a taxi to or from the pier and then take a ferry or taxi directly to your hotel on Koh Chang. A taxi directly to the hotel on Koh Chang will cost about 1,500 – 2,000 baht. You can also use a group transfer from Trat airport to the island for 400-600 baht per person.

How to get from Trat bus station to the ferry to Koh Chang

Most buses do not arrive directly at the pier, but at the Trat bus station, which is 1 km from the city. There you will already be met by local minibuses - taxis (songthaew), which for 70 baht will take you to one of the piers.

If you need a specific pier, then tell the driver about it. We were taken to Center Point Pier. It is from here that the first ferry to the island departs at 6 am.

Before taking us to the pier to the first ferry, we were taken to a cafe-travel agency, where we bought ferry tickets. You could also have breakfast or just drink coffee there. Let me remind you that the time was a little after 4 am, and the first ferry leaves at 6 am.

Ferry schedule from Center Point Pier to Koh Chang and back

Sometimes the bus going to the bus station in Trat makes a stop on the highway and drops off those going to Koh Chang. There, those wishing to go to the island are already met by minibuses and taken to the pier. From this place it is closer to go not to Center Point Pier, but to Koh Chang Ferry Pier. In this case, you will get to Koh Chang faster than if you go to the bus station.

Ferries to Koh Chang

Ferries to Koh Chang depart from two piers on the mainland

Map of ferry berths on the mainland and on the island
  • Koh Chang Ferry Pier at Ao Thammachart — located 30 km from Trat and closer to Bangkok (travel time from Trat bus station 40 minutes). Ferries run from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm every 30 minutes. Travel time is half an hour. The cost is 80 baht per person one way and 120 baht round trip. 200 baht per car round trip.
  • Center Point Ferry Pier– located 20 km from Trat (30 minutes journey). Ferries run from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays until 9:00 p.m. Depart every hour. Travel time is 50-60 minutes. The cost is 80 baht per person one way and 120 baht round trip. The car is free.

This is what the ferry to Koh Chang looks like

We were brought to Center Point Ferry Pier, since the ferry to the island departed from it earlier. We arrived half an hour before departure and watched as cars drove onto the ferry, as it began to get light and the sun rose. For us, who have difficulty getting up in the morning, seeing the sunrise is a very unusual experience :)

On the ferry, there is space for cars and bikes at the bottom, and seats for passengers on the second level. There is also a mini store here - you can buy something to eat, drink tea or coffee.

Ferry to Koh Chang - plenty of seating and a small mini shop/cafe
Ferry to Koh Chang - very few people - 60-80 baht per person
  • To and Bai Lan Bay – 100 baht per person
  • To the fishing village – 120 baht per person
  • Please note that until the minibus is full of passengers (8-12 people), the pickup will not depart (it will either wait for the next ferry or go to the next pier to look for passengers), so hurry to take seats in the departing pickups!

You can also rent a bike near the piers (from 150 baht per day) and use it to go to the hotel. This option is suitable for those who have few things and those who are good at driving a bike, because the roads on Koh Chang are very dangerous (there will be a separate article about this). While we were driving in a pickup truck to the hotel, I was horrified to think how we would ride a bike around the island. But then I got used to the steep ascents and descents :)

If you arrive in Bangkok in the morning, you can easily get to the island on the same day. If you arrive in Bangkok after 14:00, there is very little chance of getting to Koh Chang on the same day (you may be able to quickly get there by taxi, but you may also get stuck in a traffic jam leaving the city). In this case, it’s better (you can choose a hotel) or, at worst, in Trat (you can book a hotel in advance).

Where is it better to stay overnight in Bangkok or Trat? If you are in a hurry to get to the island, it is better to spend the night in Trat and take the first ferry to Koh Chang. But it seems to me that you can spend your time in Bangkok much more interesting, for example, go to evening walk on Khao San Road or look at the city from the height of the tower :)

The night bus ride was difficult for us. More precisely: the ride was not at all difficult, and even interesting, although I did not manage to fall asleep. But upon arrival in Koh Chang, fatigue and lack of sleep made themselves felt. After checking into the hotel, we tried to sunbathe near the pool, but then decided to go to our room to sleep for a couple of hours and slept all day! So if someone values precious vacation days, it’s better to spend the night in Bangkok or Trat and then go to the island :)

The cost of the road from Bangkok to the hotel on Lonely Beach on Koh Chang cost us: 265 baht + 70 baht + 80 baht + 100 baht = 515 baht per person(not including a taxi from the hotel in Bangkok to the Ekamai bus station - 100 baht for two).

We left Bangkok at 23:30, we were at the hotel at 7:30 in the morning, i.e. the journey took 8 hours.

That's all for today, subscribe to updates, in the following articles I will talk about the island of Koh Chang, the beaches of the island, attractions, food, cafes and hotels. Stay connected!

Taxi and transfer should be preferred to public transport if.

There are no sea connections between Koh Chang and other resorts in Thailand (such as Pattaya, Samui, Phuket, etc.), so we answer your questions about how to get to the island by bus or minibus, as well as by air. Also read in our blog why it is impractical to get to the island by air. Let us emphasize once again - the Pattaya Koh Chang ferry does not exist.

How to get from the airport to Koh Chang (Bangkok, Samui and Phuket).

    1. By air by local airlines

Trat Airport, owned by Bangkok Airways, is located on the mainland 17 kilometers from the pier to Koh Chang island. Flights are operated by Bangkok Airways every day from Bangkok, as well as several times a week from Samui resorts, Phuket and Pattaya. You will find the flight schedule below, and you can view and book your ticket at www.bangkokair.com. The flight from Bangkok to Trat takes 50 minutes. Next, you will need to take a minibus at the airport, which will take you to your hotel on the island. Due to the fact that only one airline flies to the airport, ticket prices start from 3,500 baht one way per person, so for two or more people it is more profitable to order a taxi to Koh Chang.

    2. From Suvarnabhumi Airport by land

All government buses that depart from the Morchit and Ekkamai stations mentioned earlier also stop at the bus station near Bangkok Airport along the way. It is reached directly from the ground floor of the airport by a free white shuttle bus, the journey time of which is about 20 minutes. The shuttle bus runs quite frequently, so there shouldn't be a long wait, so getting from Bangkok Airport to Koh Chang is easy. In the form below you can book tickets for state large and minibuses from bus stations and the airport to the island. Satan.ru minibuses from the airport leave at 11.00 and when arriving before 09.30 in the morning, this service is convenient and practical. Also, three times a day, minibuses leave from the ground floor of the airport near GATE No. 8 to transport newly arrived tourists to hotels in Koh Chang. Departure times for these minibuses are 11.00 and 14.00 daily during high season. You can purchase tickets online by filling out the form above, payment is made by credit card and they will be sent to your email electronic tickets, along which boarding the bus takes place. At 07.50 in the morning there is a big bus to Koh Chang pier. One-way ticket costs from 650 baht. During the high season, tickets are sold out several hours before the minibuses depart, so purchasing them in advance is recommended.

How to get from Pattaya to Koh Chang

The most convenient and profitable way to travel between these two points is a minibus. Most tourist shops in Pattaya sell a transfer to the Koh Chang pier for 400-600 baht, and if you want to purchase a ferry ticket from them in advance, it will cost an additional 100 baht. The trip to the pier lasts 4 hours with stops for the toilet and a smoke break. You can order a convenient minibus transfer from your hotel in Pattaya to Ao Sapparod Pier, 450 baht, or directly to the hotel - from 600 baht. Lovers of comfortable and individual transfer You can always use a Pattaya Koh Chang taxi. The cheapest, but slowest way to get from Pattaya to Koh Chang on your own is a trip on a large bus lasting 6-6.5 hours. In Pattaya, at the intersection of Sukhumvit road (Sukhumvit highway) and North (Nua) street (North street), there is a local bus station. At about 11.00 in the morning a bus stops here on the Bangkok - Pattaya - Trat route. You can buy a ticket from the ticket inspector on the bus. The second bus arrives around 14.00 in the afternoon. The cost of a ticket to the city of Trat is 120 baht, and from the city you can take a tuk-tuk and get to the pier

On the island of Koh Chang, then you, like me at one time, are faced with the question of choosing transport and route. So, how to get to Koh Chang island on your own?
Koh Chang is an island and can only be reached from the city of Trat. That is, in any case, no matter what corner of the country you get from, no matter what method of transportation you use, you will have to visit the city of Trat. And from the pier in the city of Trat, either a ferry or a boat will take you to the island.

Let's take a closer look at the option of how to get to Trat from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

    From Bangkok Airport to Trat

If you arrived at Bangkok airport with the difficult-to-pronounce name Suvarnabhumi, then there are several options for how to get to Trat:

    • Taxi from the airport or city
    • Bus from the city
    • Minivan from the city
    • Airplane Bangok Trat
    • Minivan from the airport

    Taxi

A taxi is the simplest, but also, of course, one of the most expensive options. You can order it either in the airport building, in the official pavilion (on the ground floor there will be a counter with the sign Public Taxi or you can ask any airport employee), or by going outside. If you decide to take a taxi on the street, bargain. On average, such a trip will cost about 3000-3500 baht and take 4-5 hours. For a family traveling with children, this option is quite acceptable. But not for us: it’s a little expensive, too simple, and I’m sure that “our people don’t take a taxi to the bakery shop” :).

    Bus from the city

You can get to Trat by bus from one of the bus stations. This will be either Ekamai Bus Terminal (East Bus Terminal) or Mo Chit Bus Terminal (Northern Bus Terminal).

Ekamai Bus Terminal and Mo Chit Bus Terminal bus stations on the Bangkok metro map:

Ekkamai Bus Terminal is located next to the Ekkamai metro station of the same name, literally 100 meters from the exit. As soon as you exit the metro, you will immediately see the bus station building.

Mo Chit Bus Terminal is also located near the Mo Chit metro station. But here the distance is a little greater. You will have to either walk 20 minutes from the metro or take a taxi.

The bus itself will be large, quite spacious and comfortable. Depending on the carrier company, you will be given blankets and drinking water on board. As a rule, these buses are used by the local population, and it is not customary for them to express emotions violently. So you have every chance to get there in peace and quiet.

There is enough space for luggage here. The option is quite budget-friendly - about 270 baht, but the trip will take about 6 hours, since the bus will stop often. And be careful, many drivers do not get to the pier in Trat; they stop in the city itself, a kilometer or two from the pier (you can check this when purchasing a ticket). Even if you are unlucky and your bus does not go to the pier, then for a very reasonable price of 70 baht, the nice brotherhood of tuk-tukers will take you to the ferry without delay.

The bus option is good if you are not coming directly from the airport, but are staying in the city for a day or two. Immediately after a multi-hour flight, it’s difficult to go to the station, wait for the bus and sit in it for 6 hours straight. Moreover, there is still a ferry crossing ahead of you. I didn’t plan to stay in Bangkok, so this option seemed unsuitable to me.

    Minivan from the city

There is an option to get to Trat by minivan from the city: from Victory Monument Square (it is located next to the metro station of the same name). There are pavilions around the monument selling tickets to anywhere in the country; you can buy a ticket to Trat for 300 baht one way. The journey will take approximately 5 hours.

This method is also only good when traveling from the city, and not from the airport. And in this case there is one nuance. There is very little space for luggage in minivans and it is possible that there is no free space for it except on your lap. I rejected this option because I wanted to rush straight from the airport to the island, without wandering around Bangkok.

    Airplane Bangok Trat

You can travel from Bangkok airport by plane to Trat airport. Flight time is only an hour. The cost is about 3000 baht - a little expensive, but so fast!

But in reality it turned out that not everything is so simple. There are only three flights to Trat per day. It’s difficult to predict when you arrive. And while you are checking in your luggage, checking in for your flight, waiting for it, flying, standing in line to claim your luggage, getting from Trat airport to the pier, the bus has every chance of overtaking you. Expensive and everything also takes a long time.

By the way, Trat airport is very tiny.

This option, again, did not suit me. It's probably good for families with small children: I think they find running around the airport more interesting than being stuck in a car.

If you choose this method, you can take a taxi further from Trat airport to the pier; as a rule, they wait for the arrival of each plane. Or, to be extra sure, you can order a taxi in advance. You can ask to arrange a transfer to your hotel, this is also practiced.

Transfer to Koh Chang, ordered from any company, hotel or on Koasan Road

There is an option to order a transfer through one of many companies. A large number of them are located on Koasan Road (the main tourist street of Bangkok), or via the Internet. There are even Russian-language sites where you can make a similar order. In this case, the cost will vary on average from 400 to 900 baht per ticket for one person. The cost depends on the carrier company you choose and the range of services it provides. By agreement, you will be picked up from the airport or city. They will deliver you to the pier in Trat, or to the hotel on Koh Chang, this must be agreed upon in advance.

I once used such a service, but it was the Chiang-Bangkok route, and not vice versa, since ordering a transfer to an arriving plane seemed unreliable to me. Planes have a bad habit of often being late, the flight can even be rescheduled, and such companies usually work on prepayment.

    Minivan from the airport

And finally the option that seemed optimal to me. On the ground floor of the airport, next to gate number eight, there is a small kiosk that sells tickets to Chang. Not only, of course, in Chang, in other parts of the country too. It's not hard to recognize by its yellow sign. Just pay attention: this pavilion is located on the first floor! When you arrive, get your luggage and go downstairs, behind the glass doors you can see the road, cars, a complete illusion that you are on the first floor. But that's not true. You went down from the third floor to the second. You need even lower. The first time, having arrived and not realizing that I was above ground level, I made several circles around the second floor of the airport in search of this kiosk :-).

The cost of such a transfer is 600 baht per person, in my case, the cost of the ferry was already included in the ticket, I was supposed to be taken directly to the hotel on the island. I didn’t quite understand how this would happen, but since they promised to deliver, I’m ready to at least sail in a minivan. This is almost exactly what happened later.

This company has only a few flights to Chang: two or three in the morning. Moreover, these flights are not tied to the schedule, if there is one. The minivan is filled with passengers and departs when there are no empty seats left.

There is not much space for luggage here, but it is there. All the passengers on my flight had luggage, but the driver, apparently, has been playing Tetris with bags for years - he managed to pack everything very cleverly. I traveled around Thailand several times with similar companies. The first time, when boarding, they put a necklace of orchids on me, and several more times they put colored pieces of paper on me, like luggage. The first time I thought: “This is probably a sign of hospitality.” Subsequent times: "Bureaucracy". And now it seems to me that this is a way for the driver to mark his farangs (foreigners), so that, God forbid, he does not lose them during a stop. They are all alike - big, white and it is not clear what they are babbling in their own language.

Travel time is approximately five hours. There are two gas station stops along the way. Gas stations have everything you need: toilets, cafes, small shops, but no ATMs. The stop takes 10-20 minutes. The driver informs you in advance how long the stop lasts.

Through the entire city of Trat you are taken to the pier, then you slowly, in a series of other cars, drive on board directly in a minivan. The driver parks on the first floor of the ferry, and all passengers move to the second floor, where there is a small kiosk, benches and a stand with free maps.

At first glance, the ferry does not inspire much confidence: it looks like a huge rusty trough, but I have tested this vehicle many times, and it is quite reliable.

Having moored to the pier, the cars also drive ashore one after another and transport their passengers to their final destinations. That is, in this case, to the hotel you need. They will give you a ride directly to the hotel, and they will also help you carry your things to the reception.

    From Trat to Koh Chang

If your ticket did not include the ferry, you will need to buy one at the pier. Here, in general, everything is clear; there are ticket offices right in front of the entrance to the pier. If you suddenly don’t see it and pass by, the employees still won’t let you through, they’ll show you the cash register. The cost is 80 baht per person one way, 120 baht in both directions, baggage, whatever it may be, is not paid. Children under 8 years old travel for free. Swim for about half an hour.

And yes, there are several piers in Trat, the main ones being Center Point Ferry Pier and Ko Chang Ferry Pier (or also called Ao Thammachat). There are a few more, but they don’t carry tourists; they are used mainly by the local population and for trips to other islands of the archipelago.

Personally, I advise you to go to Ko Chang Ferry Pier (Ao Thammachat). Ferries leave from here every half hour, starting at 6.30 am. From Center Point Ferry Pier ferries start running a little earlier, from 6.00, but the interval between them is longer - an hour.

Be careful, the last ferry leaves at 19.00, rarely stays until 19.30. There will be no further ferries until the morning. If you suddenly arrive at the pier after this time, there is still a chance to get to the island. There are private carriers that will take you on their boat, but it is not cheap, about 3,000 baht. Moreover, you will need to try to negotiate on the spot, or order such a service in advance from some company.

From Ko Chang Pier to the center

There are no and cannot be any problems with leaving the pier deep into the island. Tuk-tukers guard every ferry, with trained eyes they look for people who are not tanned enough and invite them aboard their “ship”. The cost will be around 50-80 baht per person, depending on the distance of your hotel. They know all the hotels by ear, so they shouldn’t confuse them and deliver them to the other side of the world. By the way, traveling by tuk-tuk on the roads of the island is very impressive. The road is made in such a way as to cause minimal harm to the jungle, the crazy ups and downs are no worse than on any attraction. And all this in a car like this.

On my first trip, I properly clung to the window while driving the car up the hill. I didn't want to end up on the asphalt. And you won’t believe it, but it’s two-story. Luggage is usually carried on top of the roof if there are many passengers. A couple of times, I saw the local population skating there. Of course, tourists are not accommodated on the roof.

In any case, no matter what transport you choose for your trip to Koh Chang, I am sure that this island will steal your heart just as it once stole mine!

Transport to Koh Chang varies, but since it is still an island, no matter which option you choose, in any case it will include a ferry, even if it is by plane (the nearest airport is located on the mainland) or a transfer from hotel to the hotel (in this case, the minibus with you in the cabin will be transported by ferry and thus take you to the doorstep of the selected hotel).

How to get there from Moscow?

It is absolutely impossible to get to Koh Chang directly from Moscow and other cities of the world, since, as already mentioned, there is no airport on the island. If the nearest available one (in the province of Trat, on the mainland) can be reached from countries such as Malaysia, Japan and some others, then from Moscow and other CIS countries you can only go to Koh Chang through Pattaya or Bangkok.
