Smolensk survived the Mongol invasion, but survived several seizures by Lithuania and Poland, and finally became part of the Russian state only in the second half of the 17th century. In 1812, Smolensk was destroyed by Napoleon's army, and in 1941 it was badly damaged during the battles with the Nazi invaders. The restoration of the castle was carried out, now it is a large museum-like palace and park complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
