We often like to go to Pereslavl for a couple of days. It’s really very convenient to go there from Moscow by car. Usually we make our route through Sergiev Posad. It turns out that in one weekend you can visit two cities of the Golden Ring at once.

A little about the history of the city

Pereslavl-Zalessky is the same age as Moscow.

There were several cities in Rus' with the name Pereslavl. There was Pereslavl-Yuzhny (now the city of Khmelnitsky), Pereslavl-Ryazan (now Ryazan) and our Pereslavl. It received the prefix “Zalessky” because it was located in Zalesye - behind impenetrable forests from Kyiv and Chernigov.

This city was founded by Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152. Initially, it served as a fortress and protected Suzdal and Vladimir from enemy raids. The city flourished in the 13th century. At this time, Pereslavl became the center of the Vladimir-Suzdal lands.

Pereslavl is the birthplace of Alexander Nevsky. He was born here in 1221.

Despite the fact that Pereslavl is the birthplace of the great Russian commander, who won brilliant victories over the Swedes and Teutonic Knights and was canonized, its coat of arms is extremely peaceful. It depicts the famous Pereslavl vendace - fish that are found only in Lake Pleshcheyevo.

From Moscow on a direct road.

By car

From Moscow to Pereslavl-Zalessky we are driving along the Yaroslavl highway(M8 highway), past Sergiev Posad. You can drive through Sergiev Posad itself, visit the Lavra along the way and have lunch in this city. Or, if Sergiev Posad is not needed, drive past on the bypass road. The time from MKAD to Pereslavl is 1.5-2 hours (about 140 km).

By public transport

Unfortunately, there is no railway in Pereslavl-Zalessky.

City center

One of the most unusual finds occurred here during restoration work in 2015, when ancient inscriptions (ancient Russian graffiti) were found on the walls containing information about the murder of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky with the names of his killers listed.

Once upon a time, the walls of the cathedral were decorated with unique frescoes of the 12th century, which, unfortunately, have been lost. The only surviving piece of one of the cathedral frescoes can be seen in Historical Museum of Moscow.

Officially, the cathedral now belongs to the Pereslavl St. Nicholas Monastery, but services are rarely held here. We, like most tourists, only managed to walk around the cathedral and admire the monument to A. Nevsky.

Vladimir Cathedral

It is also called the New Cathedral.

It was built in the 18th century. and took over the functions of the old Transfiguration Cathedral. During the construction of the cathedral, the Bogoroditsko-Sretensky Monastery was located on this territory, which was later abolished and has not survived to this day. During the Soviet period, the House of Physical Education operated in the temple. Now it is a functioning temple. It is easy to get inside during the morning or evening liturgy.

Alexander Nevsky Church

Not big temple, together with the Vladimir Cathedral, is part of the Red Square complex of Pereslavl. In style, these two temples are very similar and were built at the same time. Rybnaya Sloboda

Church of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste

A small but very beautiful church in Rybnaya Sloboda. It stands on the shore of Lake Pleshcheevo, near the mouth of the Trubezh River.

The exact time of the founding of the church is unknown, but it is known that in the 17th century. it already existed. Be sure to go inside the church, there is an incredibly beautiful wall painting, which was done after the return of the church to the Russian Orthodox Church in the 90s. The monastery was founded during Ivan Kalita(beginning of the 14th century). The original wooden buildings of the monastery were destroyed by the troops of Khan Tokhtamysh. Later it was rebuilt through the efforts of Dmitry Donskoy’s wife. The monastery was abolished in 1744. At first, the residence of the bishop of the Pereslavl diocese was placed here, but after 44 years it was closed too.

The territory of the monastery is quite impressive, which speaks of its wealth and prosperity in past years. Powerful stone walls with towers, as well as the Passage and Holy Gates, appeared here in the 17th century. Currently located on the belfry observation deck , from which you can admire views of the city outskirts and Lake Pleshcheyevo. Although it is small in height, the monastery itself stands on a mountain, so the views from the site are very spectacular.

The largest temple on the territory of the monastery is Assumption Cathedral. It began to be built in the 50s of the 18th century, but due to the abolition of the diocese, it was never completed. Holy Trinity Danilov Monastery

Located near the Goritsky Monastery.

This monastery was founded in 1508 by St. Daniel. During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1995. Now it is active monastery. The most interesting thing on the territory of the monastery is Trinity Cathedral Built in 1532. Inside this cathedral are frescoes from the 17th century., created by masters of the Kostroma school under the leadership Guria Nikitina and well preserved to this day.

Interestingly, the Trinity Cathedral was built in honor of the birth of the son of Vasily III, the future Tsar Ivan the Terrible.

During his lifetime, Saint Righteous Daniel was known as the patron saint of all the poor, homeless, sick and wretched. It is not without reason that the first hospital in Pereslavl was opened on the territory of this monastery.

Feodorovsky Convent

The monastery was founded in 1304. Initially it was a men's monastery, but since 1667 it was converted into a women's monastery, and the small male brethren were redistributed to other monasteries of the diocese.

The main temple on the territory of the monastery is Feodorovsky Cathedral, which was built and named after the son of Ivan the Terrible in 1557.

Under Soviet rule, the monastery was abolished. During this period, it housed either a children's colony, or a nursing home, or military institutions, or a dormitory at the institute.

The monastery is famous for housing one of the most revered icons of the Mother of God in Russia - the Andronikov Icon of the Mother of God. After its destruction under Soviet rule, it was in Kazan, and then in the Epiphany Cathedral of this city, from where it was mysteriously stolen in 1984.

The icon, which is now in the monastery, was brought here by one of the parishioners in 1998. And in 2005, according to the monastery chronicle, a real miracle happened here. The Icon of the Andronikovskaya Mother of God began to smell fragrant and, in the winter of 2006, to flow abundantly myrrh. Our impression of visiting the Feodorovsky Convent is that the monastery is quite well-kept, with a large territory, but everything has been completely restored. The nuns are very friendly (they say that in total there are about 20 sisters living there now). In the temple where the miraculous icon hangs, there are many pilgrimage groups, but there is no fuss.

Sretenskaya Church

Well, there are plenty of churches in Pereslavl. I personally will not take the liberty of counting all the cathedrals and churches in this city. But I would like to highlight the Sretenskaya Church in particular. First of all, because it costs almost the same high place cities. And it looks so small and cozy among the huge monastic territories that surrounded it. It seemed to be lost among the three Pereslavl monasteries - Goritsky, St. Daniel and Feodorovsky.

The church was built in the 18th century. in a classical style, on the site of a wooden temple. From this place you can clearly see the panorama of the southern outskirts of the city with the three monasteries located here. On normal days, the church is open only in the morning. On major holidays, evening liturgy is also held.

Arboretum

It is located next to Feodorovsky convent. It will be interesting for walks in the warm season for those who come to Pereslavl for a few days. The arboretum was created by a resident of Pereslavl-Zalessky, Honored Forester of Russia - S. F. Kharitonov. He looked after the park almost until the end of his life (and he died at 94). This good place to take a walk and relax in nature. For children there is a playground, a Fairy Tale trail, many wooden sculptures, and a large collection of plants. Nikolsky Monastery

A functioning convent with a fairly well-groomed and cozy area - a pond, flower beds and fruit trees.

The monastery has a long history and was also originally founded as a monastery. Many buildings in it were destroyed after the revolutionary events. For example, the bell tower and the main temple of the monastery - St. Nicholas Cathedral - were blown up in the 30s of the 20th century.

St. Nicholas Cathedral was rebuilt in 2003, but new style the building does not repeat the previous one. Now it is one of the largest and most majestic temples in the city. And in the place where the bell tower stood, there is now a belfry with three bays.

The main shrine of the monastery is the Korsun Cross. This is a special, ancient Byzantine type of cross, with particles of saints’ relics inside.

There were only 10 such crosses. During Soviet times, the cross was in the Pereslavl Historical Museum, but in 2009 it was returned to the monastery. Also in the St. Nicholas Monastery are relics of St. Andrew of Smolensk, and now a temple dedicated to him is being built.

Northern part of the city

Nikitsky Monastery

This is another famous place of pilgrimage in Pereslavl. Stay here relics of St. Nikita the Stylite, the famous Pereslavl wonderworker and great martyr who lived in the 12th century.

Nikitsky Monastery is one of the oldest in Russia and the oldest in Pereslavl-Zalessky. It is believed that it was founded as early as 1010.

The founder of the monastery is considered to be the blessed Prince Boris, the son of Prince Vladimir - the baptist of Rus'. The original wooden buildings of the monastery, of course, have not survived to this day. The oldest monastery buildings date back to the 16th century. - the era of the reign of Ivan the Terrible. This time marked the period of greatest prosperity for the monastery. Ivan the Terrible intended to use the monastery as a fortress. Therefore, he erected powerful walls with towers and loopholes.

Nikitsky Cathedral- the main temple on the monastery territory. It was built in the 16th century. The relics of St. Nikita the Stylite are hidden in the temple. St. Nikita the Stylite died at the hands of robbers who mistook the old iron chains in which the Saint was dressed for silver. In 1786, a stone chapel was built on the site of his prayer service (pillar-well).

Trinity Church and the grave of Blessed Mishenka-Samuel

A small, unremarkable-looking church on the very edge of the city in Troitskaya Slobodka, which is now not in the best condition. But the church is active, has a long and interesting story. It is not necessary to go inside; you will not see much interesting there. But this place itself may be of interest to those who come to Pereslavl-Zalessky for pilgrimage purposes. The fact is that here is the grave of the locally revered Saint - Blessed Mishenka-Samuel.

He lived in Pereslavl at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The story of his life is interesting and tragic, reminiscent of the fate of other famous Russian Saints - Blessed Matrona and Ksenia of St. Petersburg. Among believers far beyond Pereslavl, his burial place became famous as miraculous. Festive services are held there; many come to the grave asking for healing and other help.

If you leave the city towards Rostov, you will immediately notice the sign “Grave of Bl. Mishenki-Samuel” standing on the road.

Museum-Estate “Botik Petra”

Although this is one of the most famous attractions of Pereslavl-Zalessky, it did not make much of an impression on us. Although the place where Botik is located is very beautiful and perfect for walking. We walked there in winter; in summer it is probably even more beautiful. "Peter's Boat" is located outside the city, next to Lake Pleshcheyevo, near the village of Veskovo.

We also did not dare to go to the Botik cafe. They say that you should definitely try the most famous Pereslavl dish here - vendace royally(which is found in Lake Pleshcheyevo).

In search of good Russian food, we decided to drive a little further - to the place praised by our friends tavern "Popov Meadow". Great place, highly recommend it! Nearby there is a store with local farm products (the name sounds a little Lithuanian - “Labaz”).

Lake Pleshcheyevo

Pereslavl is famous for being located in very beautiful places - at the confluence of the Trubezh River into Lake Pleshcheyevo. The landscapes around are very picturesque and hilly. It’s no wonder that many filmmakers used the city’s surroundings to film their films. The most famous is, of course, S. Eisenstein’s film “Alexander Nevsky”.

Lake Pleshcheyevo is the habitat of the most famous local delicacy - Pereslavl vendace. The image of this fish is on the coat of arms of Pereslavl. In former times it was called the “royal herring” and was served to the table of royal persons.

In summer there is a recreation center on Lake Pleshcheyevo. You can swim in the lake, there is a beach, places for fishing. Behind the beach there is a paid recreation area with a mini-zoo (mostly all sorts of goats and birds, but there is also a large bear in a cage), and a small museum of antiquities. This place is called "Cossack camp"(open only during the warm season).

Blue stone

The most famous object of Lake Pleshcheevo. Many come here from afar specifically to look at this stone. Honestly, I don’t really understand why? This is a huge boulder, not very interesting in appearance, but shrouded in mysticism and various legends. Perhaps this mysticism attracts curious tourists here. And, of course, it’s customary to make wishes here.

The weight of the stone is 12 tons. It is called blue for its bizarre shade - slightly blue.

History of the Blue Stone in brief

It is not known exactly when it appeared in these parts, but it was back in the days of paganism. Obviously, the ancient people worshiped him and made sacrifices. The stone was later declared a demonic relic. They stubbornly tried to get rid of it in every possible way - they walled it up, buried it, or drowned it. But the stone floated out, came out, and appeared again. In the end they decided to leave him alone. So it now lies on the shore of Lake Pleshcheevo, at the very foot of Alexander Mountain.

There are rumors that this miracle stone changes its position every year.

At the very top of Alexandrova Mountain, where the Blue Stone is located, stands cross of A. Nevsky. It was erected on the site of a former monastery founded by Alexander. If you wish, you can climb up and see it, and at the same time admire the surrounding landscapes.

Arrival, check-in

Since the trip was not pre-planned, there was no longer the opportunity to choose hotel rooms closer to the arrival date. The better rooms were occupied, as were the Standard rooms with one large bed. We stayed in a Suite category room (the cost of this room at a non-refundable rate for our dates was 2,880 rubles with breakfast).
I was allowed to take a photo of the Standard with two single beds. Other rooms were occupied. Please note that the Standard room is small, but very nice.

So, we arrived at the hotel at 13.30. The hotel surprised us with a renovated facade and a decently filled parking lot. "Pereslavl" turned out to be a very popular hotel.
We were greeted warmly at the reception. I filled out the Guest Card. Checked out quickly, without any problems. We received our room key card and took the elevator to the third floor.

Suite

Suite - a room with two rooms - a spacious living room and a small bedroom (isolated rooms).
The living room has a sofa, desk, chair, wardrobe, large mirror, nightstand and coffee table.

There is a large TV on the wall that shows about 12 channels.

The bedroom has a large bed, bedside tables, and a table lamp.

The room has two balconies. Our windows looked out onto a large area in front of the hotel and the road. The site will be improved in the near future.

I want to warn you right away. Despite the fact that the hotel is somewhat removed from the road, traffic noise can be heard at night. Well, let's just say, until one o'clock in the morning for sure. Then it's quiet until the morning. If you are sensitive to noise, when booking, specify a room with windows facing the courtyard and away from the elevator. The road didn’t bother us much, we didn’t hear the elevator at all, but you never know... People are all different.
By the way, the windows in the hotel are already modern, double-glazed. There are mosquito nets. The windows are large, floor-to-ceiling (French). We woke up in the morning, the sun seeps through the tulle, jumps through the thick curtains, floods everything around... The feeling is incomparable!

As for the furniture. All the furniture (wardrobe, table, etc.) is quite new.

Leather sofa needs updating. When unfolded, the upholstery of the sofa mattress came apart in places. And if you start looking for the disadvantages of the room, then you can definitely cling to the sofa. Yes, not new. But if you remember the adequate price of this Suite and many other advantages of the Pereslavl Hotel, then you no longer want to cling.

In general, I slept very well in the room. It's a rare occurrence that we woke up before our daughter.
There are no complaints about the bed, bed linen, pillows and blankets. Everything is clean and comfortable.

I also want to note an important point for me. The room is very warm and comfortable to be in. And this despite the fact that we stopped by on a day when it was about zero outside, even snowing. Why did you pay attention to this? Yes, in almost every hotel I was freezing all autumn, winter and spring, waking up with a stuffy nose. And here it’s warm everywhere - in the room, corridors, halls, cafes. We wore short sleeves.

The room has Wi-Fi. The Internet worked quickly, without interruptions.

On the table there is an electric kettle, glasses, cups, spoons, saucers. A small retreat- coolers with hot and cold water - in the hall.

In addition to the living room, bedroom and two balconies, the room has a small hallway-hallway

and a bathroom.
The bathroom has a bathtub, sink, warm heated towel rail, shelf and towel hangers. Each guest is provided with two towels (large and medium) plus a foot towel. Bathrobes and toiletries (soap, shampoo and shower gel) are also provided. Hairdryer and slippers are available free of charge upon request.

Meals at the Pereslavl Hotel - Fit Café and Grand Café

This is a serious question. A good breakfast is a must. A good lunch and dinner is an enjoyable part. And if good breakfasts are found in hotels from time to time, then we managed to have a good lunch and dinner in hotels... We almost never managed to, I won’t lie. ​The Pereslavl Hotel was an exception.
I'll start with breakfast. IN Cafe Fit In the morning (from 8.00 to 11.00) buffet breakfasts are organized. Breakfast is very good. Delicious. Two types of milk porridge, omelet, eggs, cheese, sausage, ham, casserole, potatoes, sausages, muesli, cereal, yogurt, juices, tea, coffee, etc. In terms of the quality and organization of breakfasts, the Pereslavl Hotel is the best of all where we lived in Pereslavl. In other words, if a good breakfast is more important to you than new furniture and modern design, then this is the place for you.

But breakfast is breakfast, but the question of where to eat in Pereslavl-Zalessky remained open to us until now. I’ve talked about this many times and won’t repeat it, but in recent years we haven’t been able to find our own cafe (restaurant) in Pereslavl. And then, unexpectedly...
has been working at the Pereslavl Hotel for a long time. It's surprising that many haven't heard of him. Including us. Most likely the fact is that it is somewhat removed from the road, and it is difficult to see it during the day. It’s easier at night - the illuminated “FIT Cafe” sign is clearly visible.

Prices are moderate. There are discounts.

There is a fairly varied Lenten menu (this was important for us) and a children's menu.

I liked the fact that the food is prepared upon ordering (and not heated). Everything is fresh. I liked the service - prompt and friendly. There is a service to order food to your room.
But the most important thing is that it’s delicious here! Including a delicious Lenten menu and delicious desserts.

In addition to the Fit cafe, on the ground floor in Pereslavl there is Grand Cafe. This new restaurant. Many people don't know about him. Take note! Here you can eat a la carte, drink delicious coffee, and also order a banquet, celebration, lunch and dinner for tourist groups. You can enter the Grand Cafe through main entrance to the Pereslavl Hotel.

On at the moment the hotel "Pereslavl", in our opinion, is the best in Pereslavl-Zalessky of those in which we have stayed. Not ideal (I hardly know anyone who is ideal), but best overall very many factors.

Yes, the numbers are imperfect. For lovers modern designs and interiors, ergonomically organized spaces, it is quite possible that you will not like something in the rooms. BUT they are clean, cozy, and you sleep well. And there is a choice - by category and location (windows facing the courtyard or the road). This is not so little.
And I also like that oldest hotel in Pereslavl it is developing, improving, thinking about the future. Cafes are opening, the facade and halls are being updated. There are further plans to improve the surrounding area. This means the hotel will be even better and more attractive.
Do I recommend the Pereslavl Hotel? Yes, I recommend

• for everyone who is looking for inexpensive accommodation in Pereslavl-Zalessky (with a good breakfast),
• parents with children of different ages,
• large families
• tourists who want to get a quality excursion program,
• tourist groups.

P.S. My husband asked me today in surprise why we had never stayed here before. The answer is simple. I usually book hotels on Booking.com. And I set certain criteria in the search. The rating is from 8. So the system did not give me the Pereslavl Hotel. Their rating is slightly lower.

There are a lot of interesting things in Pereslavl - ancient churches, monasteries, and all sorts of unusual museums, and how beautiful Lake Pleshcheyevo is beyond words. But I will talk about all this later, but for now I’ll show you where in Pereslavl you can stay for the night and where to have a delicious dinner.
For residents of Moscow, Yaroslavl and their environs, Pereslavl is an excellent place where you can make your own weekend tour - arriving in the city after lunch on Friday or Saturday morning and returning home on Sunday evening. Of course, you can stay with a tent on the shore of the lake, but sometimes you still want comfort and convenience, which means you need to choose the right hotel.

First, I will show you the hotel in which we lived ourselves.

The Pereslavl Hotel is the largest in the city, and most importantly it is quite conveniently located, many interesting places can be reached on foot, and for those who come to the city by car there is ample parking in front of the hotel.

This is the hotel lobby. Here you will be met, given the keys to your room, and here you can buy souvenirs.

We got a superior room with two beds, consisting of two rooms, which was very convenient.

This is a bedroom, there is also a wardrobe, a table, a small refrigerator, and a TV. The room has bathrobes, but no slippers, although in my opinion they are completely unnecessary because all the floors are covered with carpet.
The only negative we noticed was the lack of sockets near the bed, this is important for me, because I like to surf the Internet before going to bed.

This is the second room, with a sofa, a coffee table and a couple of cabinets for things. It is not very large, but is great for relaxing and for work. Both rooms have access to a balcony.

Well, the bathroom. A bathtub instead of a shower gives it a homely feel. For guests there are bottles of shampoo, shower gel and soap, which are renewed as they are used. I was very pleased to have a hairdryer, because it’s not May and you won’t go out with wet hair.

In the morning, before going for a walk around the city, you need to have breakfast

Guests can enjoy a variety of juices, fruit drinks, compotes, tea and coffee

You can take omelette, semolina, sausages, boiled potatoes, buckwheat porridge, vegetables and pickles

There are porridges with water and milk, sliced ​​cheese and sausage, and boiled eggs. In general, it is very difficult to stay hungry.

I already foresee the question of prices. In my opinion the price tag is quite adequate. Our room costs 2600 per day. The hotel also has standard double rooms for 2000 rubles and suites for 3200, so it all depends on your desires and capabilities, and if you book through the hotel website, you can also get a discount of up to 20%!

The Pereslavl Hotel has two restaurants - the lobby bar "Grand Cafe" and "Cafe Fit".
The food here is very tasty, I even ate fish, which I usually don’t eat here, with pleasure. In general, there is some special fish in Pereslavl, I even ate herring and took some extra (for me this is practically an anomaly, because at home, when the family eats herring, I generally leave the table). And one more piece of advice from me - try the local beer “Zalesskaya Pinta”, I think you’ll like it, I liked the dark one, the red one was somehow not very good, I didn’t have enough strength for the light one))

How to get to Pereslavl from Moscow You can take a comfortable regular bus from the VDNKh bus station, travel time is about 2 hours, the ticket costs 459 rubles. If you buy a ticket online, you need to print it out; without a paper ticket, you won’t be put on the bus, but will be sent to the ticket office, where you will pay another 35 rubles for printing.

And one more important point. In Pereslavl there is no Tele2 reception, so if you only have a SIM card from this operator in your phone, then there is a big chance of being left without a connection, although it may be good, but you will have a rest)))
