Hanoi - Mui Ne. What is our life? Just the way! How long does it take to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne?

If you are going on vacation to the coast of the South China Sea, you should take into account that planes mainly fly to the southern capital of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and you have a road to the sea and the question arises “Ho Chi Minh City - Mui Ne: how to get to the booked hotel?” There are different ways to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne - by bus, by train or by ordering a transfer, so let's look at all the pros and cons of each method.

Ho Chi Minh City - Mui Ne: how to get there by bus

You can get to Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh City by regular bus. Such buses are called “sleeping buses” because the seats in them are made so that you can sit reclining (sleeping in English means sleeping). The seats in such buses are located in two tiers and three rows. Sleeping buses are equipped with air conditioning and sometimes TVs (in Vietnamese, of course), and many buses even have free Wi-Fi and a dry toilet. The cost of a seat on such a bus will be $7. The price of a bus may double during the Vietnamese New Year - Tet; there may also be no seats on the bus in Tet and there may be serious traffic jams on the roads. There are also regular seated buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne.

The disadvantage of this method of transportation (besides the fact that it is public transport) is that the buses run on a schedule that does not always conveniently coincide with the arrival of planes at the airport. In addition, if you arrive on an evening flight and are delayed in retrieving your luggage, there is a chance that you will not catch the bus and will have to spend the night in Ho Chi Minh City (the cost of an inexpensive hotel will be $15-20 per room). Another inconvenience is that the buses depart from a street that is far from the airport and you will have to use the services of taxi drivers to get there (a taxi will cost about the same $7 on the meter if the taxi driver does not drive you around), and with luggage, you agree, this is an additional problem.

The Ho Chi Minh City - Mui Ne journey by bus will take you approximately 5 hours. The journey from the airport to the bus departure point in the center (on Pham Ngu Lao Street) will take approximately 30 minutes.

Ho Chi Minh City - Mui Ne: how to get there by train

Unfortunately, there is no train station in Mui Ne. The closest one is in the neighboring city of Phan Thiet. There are two trains daily from Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet. Getting to Mui Ne in this way is not very convenient and therefore this type of transport (in the direction of Mui Ne) is not very popular.

If you do decide to travel by train, upon arrival in Ho Chi Minh City you will need to catch a taxi to the train station, adjust to the train schedule, and then take a taxi from Phan Thiet to Mui Ne.

Train compartments are similar to our reserved seats, only the shelves are located not in 2 tiers, but in 3. If you go during the day, it will be very noisy (the Vietnamese are very active during the day, children run around, someone is cooking and eating something), but at night, on the contrary, it is very quiet and calm.

It is convenient to transport a moped purchased in Ho Chi Minh City on the train (sometimes it is cheaper than in Mui Ne or Nha Trang); a moped makes sense for those who are going on vacation for the whole winter or for six months.

Ho Chi Minh City - Mui Ne: how to get there by transfer from the airport

The most convenient way to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne is, of course, a transfer:

  • The transfer will arrive for your flight, the driver will be waiting for you at the exit with a sign with your name;
  • The transfer will take you to your designated hotel in Mui Ne straight from the airport, you don’t have to overload your luggage, pay extra to the taxi driver, wait for the bus or spend the night in Saigon;
  • Moreover, the transfer will take you faster than a bus for about 1 hour. That is, if your trip by bus was 5 hours (this is the approximate average time), then by transfer you will get there in 4;
  • If you are traveling with a large family or group, or find travel companions, the cost of the transfer will be comparable to the cost of a bus ticket and taxi to it.

Our transfer is always only comfortable cars designed for 4,7,12 or 16 passengers.

The transfer trip will cost from 90 dollars depending on season. You can pay for the transfer directly to the driver in Mui Ne; you don’t need to transfer anything in advance.

You will have the opportunity to sit comfortably on a soft seat, appreciate the local architecture along the way, see dragon fruit plantations, rice fields and the life of ordinary Vietnamese people.

The distance between the cities is about 220 kilometers. And upon arrival at Tan Son Nhat airport, you can take a taxi. This is the most expensive way to get to Mui Ne, but it is comfortable and fast. The travel time is about 4 hours and such a trip costs about 110 dollars, but to go for this price you need to bargain. If you can’t negotiate with one taxi driver, go to the next one.

Transfer from the hotel

To get to your desired location, you can pre-order transfer services from the hotel where you plan to stay. In terms of price, this option may be even cheaper than a taxi, which makes it the most convenient.

By bus

If you are a supporter of budget, but comfortable and interesting travel around the country, Open bus is perfect for you. But in order to buy a ticket for it, you will need to take city bus No. 152 from the airport and get to the tourist area of the city. The bus ride will cost about 4 thousand dong and your stop is Ben Tan market.

In the center, you can buy a tourist bus ticket to Mui Ne. A similar route is offered by travel companies in Dalat and Nha Trang. The average price for a trip is 5-8 dollars, for night buses the price is about 15 $. Different places have different ticket prices and departure times. Therefore, it is worth looking around and choosing the trip that will be convenient. Buses depart from the central part of Ho Chi Minh City, if necessary, you will be picked up from your hotel, and arrive in the tourist area of Mui Ne. You can ask the driver to stop in a particular area in advance.

Transport in Mui Ne

The resort town of Mui Ne has public transport. Bus No. 1 runs regularly, every half hour, from Mui Ne to Phan Thiet. The price of the trip is about 8 thousand dong. By bus you can visit on your own, which are located near the village of Mui Ne.

Transfer "Ho Chi Minh City - Mui Ne" is not an easy task, but it only seems at first glance. I found good instructions on the website backdoorpath.ru. I would also like to quote with my additions and personal experience. In order to continue the “How to get there” section and open a new one about “Vietnam” :)

Since the railway stations are located rather inconveniently, I’ll tell you about the best way - by bus. So, step number one: get from Tan Son Nhat Airport, located in Ho Chi Minh City (old name Saigon) to the bus starting point in Mui Ne. There are no direct buses from Saigon Airport to Mui Ne. Since buses in Mui Ne depart from Pham Ngu Lao Street, which is located in District 1 and is a tourist area with a bunch of hotels, we will get there from the airport. You can get to Pham Ngu Lao Street by taxi or bus. Hooray, it’s quite a short drive and you can easily do it in half an hour if you’re lucky with the traffic on the roads. Bus from Ho Chi Minh City Airport to the city: Bus No. 152 runs from the airport exit, which will take you to the city's central bus station, located next to Pham Ngu Lao Street - this is the final stop. The bus runs between Saigon and the airport from 6am to 6pm and runs every 20 minutes. Cost of the trip: 5,000 VND ($0.23) and the same for luggage heavier than 10 kg. Taxi from Ho Chi Minh City Airport to the city: Taxi drivers at the airport exit charge incredible prices: they start at 600,000 dong ($28) and do not negotiate below 400,000 ($19). Therefore, it is easier to immediately order a taxi from one of the offices at the airport: in several windows (even at currency exchange offices) you can see an advertisement about the possibility of ordering a taxi. Here a taxi will cost 210,000 ($10). Presumably, 10,000 should go towards paying the driver for parking at the airport, but it is better to clearly specify this point when ordering a taxi, otherwise the driver will insist that you pay for the parking yourself. A taxi from the city to the airport will cost a little less: you can also order it at any tourist office in Pham Ngu Lao for 160,000 ($7.5). Again, if you don’t discuss it in advance, when entering the airport the driver will ask you for an additional 10,000-20,000 dong for the same parking, for which he will also take money from the next client departing from the airport to Ho Chi Minh City.

I got out of the airport and walked about 50 meters. Then I got into a taxi, after looking at the price tags per kilometer. They are glued to the rear side windows of the car. A taxi to the hotel in the center cost me 160,000 dong according to the meter. But the taxi driver still charged 20,000 for parking. I didn't argue. Finding a hotel in the center is not difficult on booking.com. Just consider the noise level in the city center;)

Step number two: get from Pham Ngu Lao Street in Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne (Mui Ne). Buses from many companies run from the tourist area of Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne; tickets can be bought at any tourist office. There are two types of buses: regular seated buses and sleeper-buses. The latter are undoubtedly more convenient, because the path is not short. Most buses leave in the morning at 8.00, then around 1 pm and in the evening at 20.00. The evening bus is very inconvenient as it arrives late at night in Mui Ne, so I would recommend staying overnight in Saigon if you don't have time for the morning and afternoon buses. The bus takes from five to seven hours. Depends on the traffic situation and the specific bus and its stops. Ticket prices range from 120,000 dong ($5.6) to 170,000 ($8). I traveled on a Futa Buslines sleeper bus and I can’t say anything bad about it (except that the bus takes a maximum of 7 hours). The bus departed from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne and back on time, which is valuable, because many other bus companies on the same route are not particularly punctual. In addition, it seems that this is the only company that runs sleeper buses from Mui Ne to Ho Chi Minh City in the morning - all other morning flights are just regular seated buses. Another plus of this company is that it has many more buses than everyone else. If most travel companies usually start at 8.00, 13.00 and 20.00 from Ho Chi Minh City and at 8.00 and 13.00 from Mui Ne, then Futa Buslines has buses at other times, which can be convenient if you are returning from Mui Ne directly to the airport for the plane. Bus schedule Futa Buslines Ho Chi Minh City - Mui Ne: 7.00, 7.30, 8.00, 15.00, 17.30, 19.00, 21.00. Bus schedule Futa Buslines Mui Ne - Ho Chi Minh City: 0.30, 1.30, 8.00, 8.45, 9.30, 11.00, 13.30, 14.30, 15.30, 16.30, 23.45. Phone numbers and addresses of ticket offices: In Ho Chi Minh City, the ticket office and departure point are conveniently located next to Pham Ngu Lao (Google Maps coordinates: 10.768456, 106.693359), in Mui Ne the bus will drop you off and pick you up at your hotel (ticket office coordinates: 10.952747, 108.253429). The ticket offices (aka stops) are bright orange with green and white letters - visible from afar. Here, for example, is their sign in Ho Chi Minh City:

It’s better to buy tickets in advance, and try to avoid the last row of seats in sleeper buses: the sunbeds below can get warm from the bus’s innards, and on top, every bump will throw you up to the ceiling.

My bus traveled for almost 8 hours due to road repairs. This is so plan your trip a little in advance. In addition, you should not take a lot of water and food with you. The bus stops frequently. But it’s not always when you need it, really :)
