International airport Kazan is located 26 kilometers southeast of the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. The airport opened in 1979. It received international status in 1986. It is the only civilian airport in the republic.

A brief history of the creation and development of Kazan Airport
Since its opening in 1979, the airport began to receive large number flights. The airfield already at that time had the ability to receive aircraft of almost all types. Modernization runway, which was carried out in 1982, made it possible to receive Il-86 type airliners.
Five years later, it was awarded the status of a first class international airport. As for international flights, they began to operate on a regular basis in 1987. The first flight was sent to Berlin on a Tu-154 passenger aircraft. Since that time, Kazan Airport began servicing flights to countries such as Poland, Bulgaria, Germany, China, Mongolia and other countries of the world. In 1997, Lufthansa began flying from Frankfurt to Kazan on A-319 airliners.
Further, the development of Kazan airport moved rapidly in step with the times and trends in the world of air transportation. The complete completion of the work and the opening of the updated airport were planned for the city's millennium. The latest reconstruction and construction work at Kazan Airport began in 2009. The improvement is timed to coincide with the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which will also be held in Kazan. But the work will not stop there, since the entire range of planned works will be carried out in stages. All this will increase the airport’s capacity to 5 million people per year. Thus, in 2012 a new and modern terminal was opened. A year later, the restored terminal was put into operation.
The Kazan air terminal is represented by three terminals, namely: 1, 2, and 1A. There are two terminals located nearby, designated 1A and 1, they are connected to each other. It should be noted that terminal 1A is more modern and has the ability to handle up to 1.2 million passengers per year. Its area is 20 thousand m2. The terminal has 19 registration counters, 4 security points and 6 passport data control booths.
The older terminal 1 serves regional flights across the Volga region and the CIS.
As for the separate terminal number 2, it provides services to VIP passengers. It began to be used only in 2005.
Kazan Airport has 30 aircraft parking spaces. Two modern cement concrete runways are used to receive and dispatch airliners. One strip is 3.75 meters long and 60 meters wide. The second stripe is slightly shorter – 3.72 meters – and 45 meters wide.
During the entire operation of Kazan airport, only one aviation incident. This happened on October 17, 2013 with a Boeing 737 aircraft that belonged to Tatarstan Airlines. The car transported passengers from Moscow to Kazan. When approaching the Kazan airport runway, the aircraft crashed. There were 6 crew members and 44 passengers on board. No one survived the disaster.

What can you take on a plane?
Carry-on luggage is the items you will take with you into the cabin. Currently, the airport is constructing a business class terminal, the capacity of which will be 100 people/hour. Investments in construction amounted to 132 million rubles. In 2013 it is planned to carry out a complete reconstruction of the airport. The Bulgarian holding company Khimimport will invest in the reconstruction. It is planned that after reconstruction the airport will be able to serve up to five million people/year.
As you know, the World Summer Universiade was held in Kazan in 2013. In 2018, the city is planning to host the final stage of the FIFA World Cup. Historical background
Kazan International Airport was built back in the 30s within the city. In 1972, a project for the construction of a new air hub of international importance. Construction was completed after 7 years, and the airport was put into operation. Then it had the name “Kazan-2”, since it was located on a new territory - 26 km from the capital. And already in 1985 it was given the status of a first-class international airport.

How to get there
Kazan International Airport is located 26 kilometers southeast of the city. The airport location address is Laishevsky district of the Republic of Tatarstan.
You can get there:

- on the Aeroexpress Lastochka.
Bus number 97 runs to the airport. It departs from the Novosavinovsky district, from the Sotsgorod stop. The ticket price is 39 rubles. Travel time from the first to the final stop will be approximately 1.5 hours. Buses between the city and the airport run from 5 am to 11 pm.
If you use a personal car, the route should be built through the Orenburg Highway. It will be necessary to pass through the settlements of Big and Small Kabany. You can leave your car in the free parking lot located near the VIP terminal. There is paid parking opposite terminals 1 and 1A.
You can get to the airport by taxi, the price of which will be approximately 500 rubles.
Also, the Lastochka electric train runs daily between the airport and the city. Travel time is 20 minutes. The train departs from Kazansky Station 9 times a day - 00:15, 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 22:00. The railway station is connected to the airport building by a pedestrian gallery.
