The Kumi-threshold is inferior to the famous waterfalls of Karelia, such as Yukan on Kulismayoki (about 12-13 m), Kivakka on Olanga (12 m) and even the famous Kivach on Suna (10.7 m). It is the Kumi Threshold that is correctly considered the highest waterfall in Karelia. And among the flat waterfalls of the entire European continent, Kumi takes an honorable third place, second only to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland (24 m) and Janiskoski on Kutsajoki in the Murmansk region. (18m).

Everything new built here is done exclusively by hand and in the traditional Karelian “old-fashioned way.” Today, out of ten surviving houses in the village, five have been restored, three of which were revived from photographs and drawings. In 2012, the Karelian village was awarded an honorary award from the Europa Nostra federation. The Europa Nostra award is the highest recognition that can be received in Europe for conservation cultural heritage. In 2012, Russia nominated two objects for this title: the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and the village of Khaikola. Three interesting exhibitions “The Reading Hut”, “Tools of Northern Karelians” and “Can’t Carry Your Own Burden” (antique suitcases, chests, backpacks and keiseles) are an entertaining addition to the fascinating story about the history of the village of Khaikolya.
Khaikola is the birthplace of the national Karelian writer Ortje Stepanov. His children, showing enthusiasm and patriotism, do the difficult work of restoring their native village. They will tell you a lot of interesting things. At the end of the tour we will taste tea from a samovar.
