Tbilisi in holidays beautiful, bright, bright not only from the city lights, but also from the smiles of the townspeople who, in a pleasant bustle, are preparing for the most important day of the year.

Holiday tour program

Tbilisi is the capital of a multicolored country where several different ethnic groups are united into a nation calling itself the Kartvelians. To get to know better about the people living in Georgia before the New Year, there is absolutely no need to travel around the provinces. It is enough to visit the New Year's fairs, which appear in all corners of the city in the last week of the outgoing year.

Guests of Tbilisi on holidays can:

  • visit not only city attractions, but also go on excursions outside the city, see sights in the cities closest to the capital;
  • go to one of the young, modern ski resorts to get a dose of adrenaline and breathe the cleanest air in the mountains;
  • take part in city holiday events;
  • choose one of thematic excursions around the capital;
  • swim in the famous sulfur baths;
  • visit a colorful dukhan or a modern restaurant.

Sights of Tbilisi

New Year's Tbilisi is beautiful and bright. Married couples with children and guests of the capital will love the festive town. There you can have a pleasant time and buy souvenirs in memory of the New Year holidays in Georgia.

Children will also like Bombora Park on Mtatsminda; you can get there by cable car or car. The observation deck of the park offers a beautiful view of the city. The restaurant on the mountain has a long-standing reputation as the most prestigious city establishment. Back in Soviet era government members took famous guests there.

Another park that cannot be ignored is Rike. In its form it represents a map of Georgia. If you climb cable car to the Narikala fortress, you can see the entire park at a glance; at the fortress there are also observation platforms showing the city from different angles.

It is better to descend from the fortress on foot; a paved tourist path will lead to the fig gorge and sulfur baths. The new restored and stylized pedestrian street Shardeni is especially attractive on Christmas and New Year's days. Walking along it you can imagine yourself in some European country.

Just half an hour's drive from Tbilisi is the ancient capital of Georgia, the city of Mtskheta. Now it is the cult center of the country with the main cathedral Svetitskhoveli, under which she was buried main shrine Georgia - the tunic of Jesus Christ. Not far from Mtskheta you can visit the Jvari (Cross) Church, built on the site of one of the three worship crosses erected by the missionary St. Nina of Cappadocia. In front of the church there is observation deck, which offers a colorful view of the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers.

Trip to Gudauri

New Year even in Georgia, warm country, I want to greet you with snow and light frost. If such weather is rare in Tbilisi, then just a hundred kilometers from the capital there is a fashionable ski resort, Gudauri, equipped with modern ski lifts and developed infrastructure. The trip to Gudauri takes the whole day, so it can be used as part of your stay in Tbilisi.

In addition to descending along excellent trails, entertainment such as paragliding, riding in a Zorb, or tubing is possible.

In Gudauri restaurants you can eat the most delicious and “correct” khinkali. The Khevi region, where the ski resort is located, is famous for this dish.

On the way to Gudauri, you can admire the picturesque Zhinvali reservoir and visit the Ananuri fortress.

Tourists who decide to celebrate the beginning of the calendar year with their family in Tbilisi prefer another ski resort - Bakuriani. You should set aside at least two days for this trip, as the journey is long, and spending the Christmas holidays should be about relaxation, not fatigue.

Festive New Year events in Tbilisi

Basic holiday events in the capital of Georgia they take place on Independence Square, the main street - Rustaveli Avenue and in Rike Park. For the convenience of citizens, entertaining Christmas and New Year events and fairs are also held in every district of the city.

Concerts by professional performers, art school students and amateur performers are held for tourists and local residents.

At the Christmas trees, children are greeted by Snow Grandfather (the Georgian prototype of Father Frost) and Santa Claus. Traditionally, for almost 15 centuries, a Christmas procession called “Alilo” has been held. Participants in the procession are given gifts, which are then used for charitable purposes.

New Year - winter holiday, even in the absence of snow and frost, on specially equipped ice rinks In Tbilisi you can go ice skating, watch hockey and figure skating tournaments.

Masters of parkour, drifting, illusionists, theater and circus performers, acrobats, etc. will show their best performances and skills.

Thematic excursions around Tbilisi

Tbilisi is not just the capital of Georgia, this city is dynamically developing and changing, and every year faster and more noticeably. The city has buildings that have retained their original appearance for several centuries, and there are old attractions that have undergone renovation and restoration.

Tourists visiting the capital of Georgia for the first time are usually offered a sightseeing tour of the old city, focusing on:

  • churches of the Trinity, Metekhi, Sioni, Anchiskhati, etc.;
  • Narikala fortress;
  • Rike and Mtatsminda parks;
  • Chardin streets, Rustaveli Avenue, etc.;
  • Maidan Square, Independence Square, etc.

Guests who have already seen this will be interested in thematic excursions. Our most experienced guides can show and tell you about Tbilisi, the existence of which you never knew existed.

Most of these walks around the city, like a time machine, help you return to the past: in the 19th – early 20th centuries, when Tiflis was the cultural, political and economic center of Transcaucasia.

Ethnographic Museum under open air will introduce you not only to the culture and life of old Tbilisi, but also to the life of representatives of other ethnic groups living in Georgia.

The poet Yevtushenko once said: “Forgetting about Georgia carelessly, it is impossible to be a poet in Russia.” Many famous Russian poets and writers found their muse in Tbilisi. Despite political differences, the memory of A.S. is carefully preserved in Tbilisi. Griboedov, A. S. Pushkin, M. Yu. Lermontov, M. Gorky, B. Pasternak, etc. Lovers of Russian literature will be interested in a tour in the footsteps of poets and writers.

Visit to the sulfur baths

If in the famous film, the New Year served as a reason to visit the bathhouse, then in Tbilisi there is no need for a reason. According to the old city tradition, all respected guests must go to a bathhouse, but not a simple one, but a sulfur one. In the sulfur baths Georgian capital served aristocrats and poor people, Alexandre Dumas and his namesakes: Pushkin and Griboyedov.

If you decide to celebrate the New Year in the warm city of Tbilisi, then... go to the bathhouse. The smell of sulfur that accompanies you while bathing is not the most pleasant, but the discomfort is compensated by its beneficial properties for the body.

And professional massage performed by masters of their craft “mekise” is a brand of sulfur baths. After a bath and massage, it becomes clear that not only the year is destined to be renewed.

Visit to the colorful Tiflis dukhan

The real spirit of the old city can be felt with Pirosmani’s paintings, Kinto jokes and city songs performed by Karachokheli.

Some restaurants, stylized as dukhans of past centuries, offer a service that includes karachokheli with city songs, and kinto performing “Kintauri”, and no less important: delicious dishes of Georgian cuisine: kharcho soup, khinkali, lobio, kabab, shish kebab , khachapuri and, as the crown of the feast, real Georgian wine.

Every year the number of such establishments in Tbilisi increases, since it is interesting and exotic for tourists. Children will also be interested in sitting in the dukhan and drinking unique lemonades instead of wine. The descendants of the famous manufacturer of branded drinks continued the work of Mitrofan Lagidze, who founded the Lagidze Waters company. Now this drink is again at the peak of popularity.

Call us and we will organize thematic excursions around Tbilisi that interest you. New Year holidays in Tbilisi will remain an unforgettable holiday.

Traditions of celebrating the New Year in Georgia

Preparations for the New Year celebration begin early. Everyone buys various sweets, nuts, churchkhela, honey, wine, and prepares gifts for friends and family.

New Year and Christmas souvenirs in Georgia

According to tradition, by the New Year the house should be absolutely clean, and all old and unnecessary things should be thrown away, so a few days before the holiday, all housewives carry out a general cleaning.

The main decoration of every home is an elegant Christmas tree, shining with colorful lights. On New Year's Eve, a table is beautifully set, on which churchkhela is laid out, bowls of honey and nuts are placed, sweets are placed and decorative candles are lit.

Among the dishes on the New Year's table in Georgia, they usually include roasted pig, turkey satsivi, shoti (Georgian bread) and khachapuri. Every New Year's table must include gozinaki - traditional Georgian sweets made from nuts and honey.

Chichilaki

An important attribute of the Georgian New Year is chichilaki - the so-called. Georgian Christmas tree. Proper chichilaki is made from a hazel branch, which is divided from bottom to top into thin strips of wood. As a result, lush curly “curls” are formed on the branch, reminiscent of a long beard, which is why chichilaki is also called “the beard of St. Basil (patron of animals).” For this so-called Various sweets and decorations are also hung on the Christmas tree.

Closer to midnight, all family members sit down at the festive table, fill their glasses with champagne and say toasts. The head of the family makes the first toast for the outgoing year, the second - for the coming one. To the sounds of the traditional Georgian song “Mravaljamier”, everyone congratulates each other, gives gifts and wishes health, joy and prosperity.

One of my favorites family holidays in Georgia - New Year, for which it is customary to set a plentiful and rich table, both at home and when celebrating this event in a restaurant. Indispensable attributes of the festive table: chicken in nut sauce - satsivi and walnuts in honey - kozinaki, as well as a variety of sweets that are customary to give each other. Instead of the traditional Father Frost, residents are waiting for the arrival of the mekvle - a respected man in the family, who, according to custom, brings sweets as a symbol of goodness, happiness and good luck in the coming year. In Svaneti, upon his arrival, a basket with various dishes is hung on the door, which the congratulatory person will take with him. The Orthodox country also honors Christmas Eve.

If you don't want to celebrate New Year in Georgia, then you can choose a cheap summer tour to Georgia.

Planning a trip to winter time, take into account the climatic differences in individual regions of the country. So, in Western Georgia average temperature in winter it is in the positive range, while in the east drops of up to -15 degrees are possible. For the New Year holidays, tour operators offer specific tours to Georgia, differing in duration and prevailing program. This can be a two- to three-day wine-only tour that costs $340. If you plan to spend a week here, then taking into account accommodation and a mini-excursion program, the cost increases by 2-3 times. Week on ski resort will cost $1000 or more.

After spending the New Year holidays in Georgia, you can taste at least a dozen varieties of homemade wine, remember up to five new toasts and enjoy barbecue and khinkali to your heart's content, and if you're lucky, take home as a souvenir the Georgian New Year's symbol - chichilaki, which is usually decorated with sweets, nuts, and dried fruits , churchkhela, etc. If the trip takes place behind the wheel of your own or a rented car, then going overboard during tasting can lead to the creation of emergency situation. In this case, you can call the patrol police, who will deliver the vehicle to its destination absolutely free of charge, and the owner will be able to continue the celebration or get some fresh air on Rustaveli Avenue.

Georgia for the New Year: standard option

If you are planning to visit Georgia for the first time, then as a combined pastime, combining relaxation and immersion in the history and culture of this country, it is recommended to choose five-eight-day tours, starting 1-2 days before the holiday and lasting until January 4-5. What awaits the tourist in this case? A traditional festive feast can be held in one of the restaurants offered by the host party's tour operator. And this will be a feast itself with a series of dishes national cuisine, an abundance of wine and chacha, national fiery dances and polyphonic male choir singing.

When choosing a restaurant, pay attention to options with open areas or located on elevated surfaces. In this case, there will be a great opportunity to watch twenty-minute fireworks, in countless numbers welcoming the onset of the New Year. In Samegrelo it is customary to shoot from guns instead of fireworks. And there is no need to worry about a hangover the next day - the thoughtful organizers on January 1 provide a late breakfast - an early lunch with an offering of a sacramental glass of chacha or Georgian beer. And in Pshavi, the main action takes place exactly on the first day of the new year, while the day before the male part of the family goes to pray all night in a special house - khati.

Extraordinary photographs capturing the “friendship” of the seasons can only be obtained in Georgia and only at this time of year. Tangerine plantations against the backdrop of the lilac distances of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Range, branches of frozen persimmons, snowdrops at the foot of the Makhuntseti waterfall and snow-covered palm trees. These natural beauties are usually seen by tourists going to one of the three mandatory tastings to get acquainted with the peculiarities of local winemaking. As a rule, Kakheti wine is served in Sighnaghi, Imeretian wine in Mtskheta, and Adjarian wine in Makhuntseti. Here, guests of the country are given the opportunity to see with their own eyes the process of making wine using ancient Georgian technology, which differs from other methods.

Richest historical heritage The country is worth visiting the main ones.

The excursion program of such tours includes inspection of traditional attractions: old town with its sulfur baths, Maidan and ancient streets, Rustaveli Avenue, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Mount Matsminda. Large quantity cozy cafes with a unique and sometimes exclusive menu will leave a pleasant impression. If the duration of the vacation allows, then the program may include short-term trips (for one day) to the ancient capital of Mtsekhta with a visit to Jvari and Svetitskhoveli, Bagineti and the Samtavra Monastery. Romantics choose a trip to the Kakheti city of Sighnaghi and the surrounding area of the Alazani Valley. On the eve of Christmas Eve, the choice of visiting monasteries, temples and churches, which in ancient times served as fortresses, has been expanded.

Georgia for the New Year: extreme option

Or you can celebrate the New Year in traditional conditions for Russian tourists (light frost and a lot of snow) with sledding, skiing, skating and snowboarding. To do this, choose a trip to the Bakuriani ski resort, next to the medical mineral waters Borjomi. Thrill-seekers can head to the Goderdzi resort, which opened recently, so you can avoid queues on the ski lifts.

New Year at the Gudauri ski resort, video:

The festive program is provided only on the night from December 31 to January 1. The rest of the time will be devoted to skiing and snowboarding with free evening time. The relative youth of the resort does not imply the presence of instructors to teach beginners; the program is designed for those who have been familiar with mountain slopes for a long time and first-hand.

The text you will find below was written in winter. Since then, many cool places have appeared in Tbilisi, so I recommend that you read right away - there are routes around Tbilisi for one, two, three days. About tourist and non-pop places. You don’t have to read anything else at all, just open that link and walk around the city using the map from the post.

We again extended our apartment in Tbilisi for another week, despite the fact that we were going to celebrate spring in Azerbaijan. Well, it’s impossible to leave Georgia! Doesn't let go!

To be honest, after spontaneously purchasing tickets to Georgia in early February, I had some doubts about whether it would be boring here. In summer it’s clear - heat, fruits, cheerful people, but what can you do and see in Tbilisi in winter?

View of the city at night from the balcony of the Samikitno cafe

Of course, Tbilisi is an ancient city and wonderful in all respects, but, in my humble opinion, you can and should go here at any time of the year, not only to appreciate churches, temples and architectural wonders.

In Tbilisi you need to eat a lot and meet people! If you are thinking about what you can see in Tbilisi in winter, then the range of entertainment is not much different from summer. The main thing is that the sun is shining or there is snow, otherwise the city becomes a little dull.

End of November in Tbilisi

My favorite places and activities in Tbilisi

1. Deserter (Desertersky market)

Stock up on Desertirka, also known as Borjomi market. There you can buy cheap clothes, as well as buy vegetables and fruits, be sure to haggle with the sellers in advance.

To make it more interesting, you can take a steelyard with you and weigh the food yourself. They're making a fool of themselves in the market, the scales are twisted. So, don’t be surprised if, after paying for 3 kg of goods, you find only 2 and a half kg in your package. Here are the lowest food prices in the city.

How to get to Deserterka: located in the building of the former Borjomi station near the Central railway station, metro station Vokzalnaya (Station Square). Along the “Children's World”, peasants sell their goods; vegetables can be bought cheaper there.

2. Flea market “Dry Bridge”

Buy souvenirs at flea market"Dry Bridge". This is the main antique market in Tbilisi, located in the open air.

The selection of souvenirs here is larger than in the city as a whole, they are cheaper, and sellers are willing to bargain. Here you can buy antiques, unique handicrafts, and paintings by artists. Starts working at 11 am.

How to get there: 10 minutes walk from Rustaveli Avenue or Liberty Square metro station

3. Churchkhela

Crack the churchkhela previously purchased from some granny. Churchkhela is a national Georgian sweet made from nuts strung on a string and grape or pomegranate juice.

The most low prices to churchkhela on Desertirka. For 1 piece you will have to pay from 1 to 3 lari, depending on the type of churchkhela. It is better not to take sticks covered with a white coating.

4. Khinkali and khachapuri

Eat khinkali with potatoes, mushrooms and meat on the second floor of the Samikitno cafe overlooking the monument to King Vakhtang I Gorgasali and the Metekhi Church

Location: Tbilisi, Meidani Square (Metekhi Bridge). You can walk from Avlabari metro station in 10 minutes

Khinkali with wine on February 14
Khachapuri

5. Wine and coffee

Drink homemade wine and freshly brewed coffee at the “Old Generation” coffee house. The owner searched for the perfect coffee for a year until she found some expensive Brazilian variety.

Old Generation has very friendly hosts, a pleasant atmosphere, travelers constantly come in, you can meet and chat until the evening with interesting people from all over the former Soviet Union. The price is more expensive than other places, but the wine and coffee are really tasty.

How to get there: Avlabari metro station, st. Ghvinis agmarti, 1

6. Sulfur baths

Take a steam bath in the Sulfur Baths in the Abanotubani area. It is best to go to the baths in the evening after a day of walking in Tbilisi. These are public baths, the water in which is saturated with sulfur and comes from underground. You can order a massage in the baths. Many people like it.

I didn’t go to the baths, but I can’t help but mention this purely Tbilisi entertainment. Friends advised me to visit the baths not in the Abanotubani area, but on Lake Lisi. A new complex has opened there, prices are lower and quality is better.

Abanotubani District
Sulfur baths of Tbilisi, top view

7. Cable car

This is the first entertainment of all that is described in guidebooks. Ride the cable car to the Mother of Kartli statue and climb the walls of the fortress Narikala definitely worth it! The lower station of the cable car is located on Europe Square.

8. Mtatsminda and Tbilisi Funicular

Take the Tbilisi Funicular to Mtatsminda Park and look at Tbilisi by day or night, at the Tbilisi Tower, ride a Ferris wheel, take your child to an amusement park.

I recommend going up Mount Mtatsminda by cable car, and going back down on foot along the eco-trail, stopping along the way at the church and pantheon of writers and public figures of Georgia on Mount Mtatsminda. Griboyedov, Stalin's mother and other famous people are buried there.

Where it is: 10-15 minutes uphill from the Liberty Square metro station

Pantheon on Mount Mtatsminda

Tbilisi from the heights of Mtatsminda Park
View of Tbilisi rooftops on the way to the funicular

9. Rustaveli Avenue

Go for a walk along Rustaveli Avenue, and if you get cold, you can go to the Rustaveli cinema. Most films are shown in Russian

10. Old Tbilisi

Go wander through the back streets of old Tbilisi, look into the courtyards, chat with children, look at groups of elderly Georgians playing checkers, and at grandmothers sitting on benches under clotheslines.

Explore the Kldisubani (Skalny) area, where multi-level houses stand on the cliffs below the Narikala fortress.

Tbilisi center in winter

11. Tbilisi at night and Shardeni street

Be sure to take a walk in the evening through old Tbilisi, look at the pedestrian street Shardeni and the street where the Rezo Gabriadze puppet theater is located

Shardeni street

12. Turtle Lake, Lisi Lake, Tbilisi Sea

Go to nature closer to the water. For example, go to Lake Lisi for a picnic, walk along the embankment and visit the baths, or go to Turtle Lake to look at Tbilisi skyscrapers from above. Each of these reservoirs is attractive in its own way.

If time allows, you can go to the Tbilisi Sea. In winter there is nothing to do at the sea, but in summer all of Tbilisi is there.

Turtle Lake

13. Georgians

The last and most important point. Post to instagram, contact and facebook photo of yourself against the backdrop of Tbilisi sights, set the geolocation and wait.

If you are a girl, then within five minutes at least 10 people will write to you with an offer to meet, take a walk, drink coffee, show you the city, or take you to the best restaurant.

I didn’t go to meetings and told everyone that I wasn’t available, but offers continue to come in every day, and even if you don’t want to meet someone, you can get useful advice from local resident always nice. Georgians are cool :)

Housing in Tbilisi

If you are planning to fly to Tbilisi in winter and rent an apartment or hotel in advance, be sure to check how the accommodation is heated. You can read more about how to choose housing in Tbilisi and what to pay attention to in the articles:

What else to see in Tbilisi

I have been to Tbilisi eight times and on each trip I discovered something new. This article collected my favorite places in Tbilisi, but this is far from full list attractions. In order not to repeat myself, here is a link to a post about everything.

Have a nice holiday in Georgia! Sincerely,
