Public transport in Verona. How to get from Verona airport to the city

Verona is usually considered a day trip destination from Milan and Venice, but in our opinion the city deserves more. Firstly, Verona is interesting in itself (more on this in more detail), and secondly, Verona is convenient to use as a base for traveling to surrounding areas of no less interest. They will be discussed below.

However, before moving on to a review of travel routes from Verona, let’s pay some attention to the transport issue. On the one hand, Verona is a large transport hub, and therefore traveling around its surroundings is quite convenient through public transport. From this point of view, it is worth especially noting the railways. Many of the places mentioned below can be reached by rail. Find out the train schedule, check current prices and you can even buy tickets on the website www.trenitalia.com. In addition, there are other modes of transport, and these will also be discussed further (where appropriate). On the other hand, a number of places from Verona can only be reached with a transfer, which is often not very convenient, and some places are even better to visit by car. Fortunately, renting a personal car in Italy is not a problem - there are many rental offices, as well as rental points (see, in particular, www.rentalcars.com, www.economybookings.com and other similar sites).

Lake Gardskoe, aka Lake Garda(Lago di Garda), is one of the most attractive places not only in the vicinity of Verona, but, perhaps, in all of Italy. The local landscapes are impressive, and the tourist infrastructure is superbly developed - any traveler will find entertainment to his taste: natural beauty, beaches, thermal springs, amusement parks, water parks, wineries, diving, etc. etc. In general, it would be interesting to go here at least for a day.

On the banks of the Garda you can find many cute towns. However, if we talk about day trips from Verona, then perhaps we should focus on Sirmione(Sirmione). This town is very colorful and picturesque. In addition, the journey from Verona is not long at all - about an hour by bus LN026 to the Sirmione-Largo Faselo-"Porto" stop, from where it is a stone's throw to the Old Town of Sirmione (see www.arriva.it).

The same bus can also take you to Peschiera(Peschiera del Garda), which you can also spend a few hours visiting, thereby complementing the excursion in Sirmione. By the way, it is possible to get from Verona to Peschiera by train. It will be faster this way - it only takes 15 minutes. And then you can continue your journey by bus.

Another city that you can visit along with Sirmione is Desenzano(Desenzano del Garda). You can again get there by bus, but faster - by train or high-speed train. The journey from Verona takes about 20–25 minutes. Desenzano, like Peschiera, has bus service from Sirmione. But there are also direct ferry routes (see www.navigazionelaghi.it; sailing time is about 15 minutes). This is largely why independent tourists Most often people get to Sirmione via Desenzano.

In general, if we talk about water routes, there are quite a lot of them. Detailed information contained on the above-mentioned website www.navigazionelaghi.it. In addition to the towns already listed, you can pay attention, in particular, to Salo(Salò; with emphasis on "o"), Gardu(Garda) And Bardolino(Bardolino).

All this - southern part lakes. Let's not forget about the north. Getting there by public transport is not as convenient as going to the “south,” but the “northern” beauties are worth it. We especially note such places as Malcesine(Malcesine), Riva(Riva del Garda) And Limone(Limon). It is better to travel in this direction by car. But you can get there by water transport through the same Sirmione, Peschiera or Garda - to good weather you are guaranteed the most picturesque views. In addition, there are seasonal bus routes (see www.atv.verona.it), thanks to which you can get to the northern part of the lake both faster and cheaper.

We can talk about Garda for a long time. However, it is time to turn our attention to other directions.

Mantua(Mantova), like Verona, is often associated with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (it was in Mantua that Romeo, expelled from Verona, found refuge). And just like Verona, this place is interesting not only and not so much because of Shakespeare. Mantua was once one of the most powerful Italian city-states, and this did not pass without a trace. Since those times, many interesting sights have been preserved here, including Ducal Palace and Castle of St. George, Basilica of St. Andrey and many, many others. In addition, Andrea Mantegna lived and worked in Mantua for a long time, as is clearly evidenced by the frescoes decorating the interiors of one of the towers of the aforementioned castle (this room is known throughout the world as the Camera degli Sposi). These are all good reasons to visit Mantua. And the journey from Verona is not long - about 40-50 minutes by train Regionale.

Vicenza(Vicenza), despite the lack of ducal experience, the city is no less remarkable than Mantua. There are also plenty of palaces here, and it has its own superstar, and even the name is the same - Andrea, only not Mantegna, but Palladio, and not an artist, but an architect. Vicenza partly owes its architectural appearance to him. You can get here from Verona by rail, and if you go by high speed train, then the journey will take no more than half an hour. Therefore, a trip to Vicenza can be combined with a visit to other nearby cities. Another option is also possible. If you complement your tour of the historical center of Vicenza with a visit to its suburbs, you can stay here for the whole day. Villa Rotunda deserves the closest attention (about half an hour on foot from the station or from the center of Vicenza). Along the way, it is worth visiting Villa Valmarana ai Nani, as well as climbing the Monte Berico hill, which offers a beautiful view of the city. If hiking If you are not tempted, you can take the Linea 8 bus from Vicenza railway station to the Rotunda.

Vicenza is located east of Verona, relatively speaking, between Verona and Venice. In this part of Italy you can find other places that will be interesting to visit. These include, in particular, Padua(Padova), Cittadella(Cittadella), Castelfranco Veneto(Castelfranco Veneto) and other cities (these destinations are discussed in more detail in the article on travel routes from Venice), where you can easily go from Verona for half a day - all of them are accessible by rail. But to go for one single day from Verona to Venice – the idea, in our opinion, is not the most successful. You should devote at least 2-3 days to Venice (it’s written about where it’s best to live in Venice), otherwise you risk getting lost in the crowd and completely ruining your impression of this extraordinary city. However, if you really want to, it won’t be difficult to get there - from Verona to Venice is about an hour and a half by train.

West of Verona There are no less interesting places. However, if you plan to travel by public transport, then it is often more convenient to visit them from Milan, where, as in Venice, it makes sense to stay for a few days (read more about where to stay in Milan). The only exceptions are Lake Garda, which was mentioned above, and Brescia.

Brescia, aka Brescia, or Brescia, is not very popular among travelers and often goes unnoticed. Meanwhile, it's quite large city, where there is even a metro (however, it is unlikely to be useful to tourists, since the railway station is very close to the historical center of the city). Needless to say, the history of Brescia goes back centuries. Everything here is as it should be: there are ancient Roman ruins, a cozy Old Town, and Christian churches (Bresciana Cathedral, by the way, one of the highest in Italy), and beautiful palaces, and a castle-fortress on a hill, from where wonderful panoramic vistas open up. In general, there is something to see. The drive from Verona is a little over half an hour (by train).

Bologna(Bologna) also, in a sense, a city underestimated by tourists. True, if many have not even heard of Brescia, then everyone (well, or almost everyone) knows about Bologna - lap dogs and jackets made of Bolognese fabric have done their job. And yet, even knowing that such a city exists, not every traveler considers it necessary to come here. And it’s completely in vain, since Bologna deserves attention, no less than Verona. Fortunately, the transport links between Verona and Bologna are excellent - you can get to Bologna by high-speed train in less than an hour, although the distance is not close (studying a map of the surrounding area of Verona for possible trips for one day, it’s easy to leave Bologna out for the first it seems like it’s a long, long way to go).

If you want Italy - more and different, then Trento(Trento) It’s definitely worth a visit, especially since getting here from Verona is easy: the train ride takes about an hour. This is the foothills of the Alps. The place is beautiful. In addition, Trento has a very interesting historical center. You can wander around it for hours, looking at the frescoes on the walls of its houses. It is also worth visiting the Cathedral of San Vigilio, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Buonconsiglio Castle. This is enough for at least half a day, and if, as they say, you get hooked, then you can easily spend a whole day in Trento.

If Trento doesn’t seem enough for you, then you can go even further – to Bolzano(Bolzano, or Bozen, in German). When you get to Bolzano, you don’t immediately understand whether you are still in Italy or not, the contrast is so striking even in comparison with Trento, and even more so in comparison with Verona. Between Trento and Bolzano it is about 40 minutes by train. You can also get there directly from Verona: the journey takes about an hour and a half.

Perhaps the only disadvantage of combining Trento and Bolzano as part of a one-day excursion is that you most likely will not have time to really see anything, since to complete the experience you should set aside time not only for a walk through the cities themselves, but also to get to know their most picturesque surroundings. So, for example, from Bolzano it makes sense to climb cable car to Soprabolzano (or Oberbozen, in German), and from Trento to Sardagna. There are many walking routes in this area (they are of interest if you go here in summer) and ski slopes(People come here in winter for them). However, this is a topic for a separate detailed discussion ( detailed review ski resorts Italy can be found).

When choosing a hotel or apartment in Italy in general and in Verona in particular, use not only booking sites, but also price comparison services. We recommend Roomguru.ru.

You should do the same when searching for air tickets. Pay attention, for example, to Skyscanner.ru.

From Moscow you can fly by S7 and Aeroflot airlines, which operate daily direct flights to the city of Romeo and Juliet. Ticket prices average from 8,000 to 12,000 rubles (from 100 to 150 euros). The distance from Moscow to Verona is 2,700 kilometers, travel time is 3 hours 30 minutes.

Usually in Italy, hotel check-in starts at 14-15 hours, so this flight is quite convenient. In about an hour you will reach the center of Verona.

Aeroflot

Arrival at Verona airport at 10:05, by 11:30 you can get to the hotel, leave your things at the reception and be in time for lunch. Remember that lunch in Italy is on schedule, restaurants are open from 12:00 to 14:30-15:00. After lunch, I would recommend going straight to independent walk or individual tour according to Verona.

After the excursion, you can have a light or not so light dinner and a sound healthy sleep at the hotel - it will be an interesting and eventful day.

Sights of Verona

Verona is literally replete with attractions; many historical monuments and architectural structures, but what really made Verona so popular among tourists was Shakespeare's immortal play about love, Romeo and Juliet, which takes place in the medieval streets of the city. Since then, Verona has been secretly considered the city of love. Top attractions in the city that you can explore on your own include the Roman Arena, Lamberti Tower, Castelvecchio Castle with an art museum inside, Basilica Maggiore, Pietra Bridge, Giusti Palace and Gardens, Juliet's House, Juliet's Tomb, Romeo's House.

The historical center of Verona is beautiful, especially if you go up to one of the observation platforms of the city and see Verona from above, then it will become clear that old town divided by a river, but connected by an ancient arched bridge, from which all the narrow streets of the city depart.

Arena di Verona, or , is iconic place Verona. This ancient Roman amphitheater was built before our century and is the third largest facility of its kind in Italy. It is all the more surprising that the building has survived to this day, and not only has survived, but is also actively used, because it is here that opera concerts are held, incl. famous opera "Romeo and Juliet". This is not surprising, because almost every important object in Verona is, in one way or another, associated with this play, which made the city famous throughout the world. You can visit the walls of the Arena either on a tour or attend one of the concerts held here (held only in the summer, since the arena is located in the open air).

The Tower is considered to be the tallest building in old Verona and is extremely popular among tourists, because from here you can see Verona at a glance. The height of the tower is 84 meters. The tower is located on one of central squares old Verona - Erbe Square, which is decorated beautiful fountains and other architectural objects. By the way, you can climb to the observation deck either by stairs or by elevator, so the attraction is a must-see and is accessible to anyone.

Construction Castle Castelvecchio dates back to the 10th century, once it was just a defensive fortress, but later it was overgrown with castle towers and cozy courtyards, and today it has become a truly top attraction, no wonder the castle was included in the list of objects world heritage UNESCO. Well, for Russian tourists The castle is also notable for the fact that it resembles the Moscow Kremlin in miniature. Inside the castle is open art museum with a rich collection of paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages. The museum exhibits works mainly by local Veronese artists.

Pedro/Lamberti Tower

If you want to take a walk in a shady place (and the sun in Verona burns mercilessly) with beautiful views, then you are in. Gardens appeared here around the palace of the same name, and soon became one of the most original landscape gardens in Europe. The gardens here were built at the end of the 15th century, decorated with sculptures, and even a maze made of greenery! By the way, the garden is natural observation deck, here you can find places from where it opens beautiful view to Verona. There is an entrance fee to both the palace and the gardens, but it's worth it.

The most famous sights of Verona associated with Shakespeare's play are considered Juliet's house(the one with the balcony and the statue), Juliet's tomb And Romeo's house. All these objects are located separately from each other, so to see them all, you will have to wander around the beautiful old Verona.

In Juliet's house (on Capello Street) there is now a museum, but the most attractive part of the house is considered to be the courtyard, onto which the windows of Juliet's room and the famous balcony open, where Romeo confessed his love to the young girl. There is a statue of Juliet in the courtyard; rubbing it is believed to bring good luck. Also, many people leave notes with wishes on the wall of the house. Juliet's tomb is also located in the museum, but in another one - on Pontiere Street, the tomb is open for inspection by tourists. Romeo's house suffered a more prosaic fate; it did not become a museum; now there is a restaurant open here.

Pedro/Verona, city view

Updated 02/26/2019

Today I will do small retreat and I’ll reveal the “technical” part of the trip to Italy - I’ll tell you about moving my precious body from Verona airport to the city center. The article will also be relevant for travelers who need to get from air harbor Verona to the train station.

Independent travel one way or another pushes a person to carefully organize the trip. Nobody wants to be nervous or deal with constant problems on vacation. This is why planning is an important part of traveling. Personally, I tried to lay out the straw and provided for possible overlaps as much as possible.

Taxi service

Of course, you can always wave a white handkerchief and call a taxi, which will take you to the desired point in Verona in 15 minutes. For example, the KiwiTaxi service quotes the cost of a transfer to the center of Verona as 2500-3000 rubles. I think that ordering a taxi will be justified if there are four of you traveling. For details, check the table.

Another type of transfer is . The prices are similar, but you can immediately specify the hotel address, the number of passengers and check the cost.

Unfortunately, I never used the services of local taxi drivers, so I can’t recommend anything. I’m always a little afraid to take a taxi at the airport, since there is a high chance that the price will be increased by 2-3 times.

Bus Airbus

In general, Italy is a very friendly and hospitable country to tourists, including well-developed bus and train connections. The main thing is to understand all the intricacies of buying tickets.

This airbus runs on the route Villafranca Airport - Verona railway station (Porto Nuovo). The movement interval is 20 minutes.

The photo was taken near the entrance to railway station Verona (Porta Nuova).

The first bus from the airport leaves at 5.35, 6.30, 6.50 and 7.10, after which every 20 minutes until 20.30, and then every 40 minutes until 23.10.

The first bus from the railway station to the airport leaves at 5.15, 6.10, 6.30 and 6.50, after which - every 20 minutes until 20.10, and then every 40 minutes until 22.50

The fare is 6€. Simple mathematical operations make it clear that if four of you fly to Verona, then ordering a taxi becomes economically and morally justified. The ticket is valid for 75 minutes. So upon arrival at the railway station, you can easily transfer to a city bus and get to the hotel.

The bus stop at the airport is located to the right of the exit from the arrivals terminal. Some sources write that a ticket can be purchased from the bus driver. This is wrong. Or, specifically, our driver refused to sell them.
There is a terminal on the street where you need to buy a ticket. Thanks to the fact that many compatriots flew with me, I spied how other tourists bought tickets and purchased my own “pass”.

The science is not tricky, you put in some money, press a button and at the exit you get a ticket and change. There is one point - the machine does not accept large bills (only less than 100 €).
You need a ticket on the bus be sure to compost at the entrance. The rule is the same for regular buses and for airbuses.

!!There are wonderful And I have the latest news - an Airbus ticket can be purchased online on the website. Well that's cool! And you don’t need to deal with the terminal.

Please note that boarding for the return flight of the Airbus from the railway station to the airport takes place near the main entrance to the Porto Nuovo railway station. It’s better to immediately take a picture of the schedule as a souvenir. Airbus tickets can be purchased in a shop inside the railway station or online. The shop is very ordinary: newspapers, drinks, souvenirs. Don't look for a special ticket office, there isn't one.

On the day of departure, I noticed that special shuttles run from Villafranca Airport to Mantua. I didn’t notice the traffic schedule, but in my opinion it’s very convenient. No need to get to Verona and then take the train to Mantua.

Car rental

Another transfer option is car rental. You can book a car in advance with the car rental location “airport” and you will no longer need to understand the intricacies of buying bus tickets)).

There are amazing prices for car rentals. For example, I checked the current prices for November 2018 and the system gave me . Of course, these are small cars, like the Fiat Panda, but the same Kia Rio is offered for 650 rubles. I don’t know what kind of attraction this unprecedented generosity is, but the savings are significant, especially if you want to travel around the area and drive a car. See for yourself:

The current cost of car rental at Verona Airport can be checked in the search form:

I'll tell you a little about the airport itself.

I didn’t get a good look at the arrival terminal, because I quickly took my suitcase and went to look for the airbus stop. But I spent quite a long time in the departure terminal, since I arrived at the airport early. Inside there are several souvenir shops and cafes. Dutyfree is not fancy. The selection is small, prices are high. I compared with the prices of a regular supermarket.
My advice is to worry about gifts in advance and don't leave everything until last.

If Verona is not the final destination of your route, then in any case all transfers must be made at the railway station. Either you go further along the route by train or by bus. The bus station is located opposite the station.

Friends, if you have already arrived in, then I strongly recommend staying in the city for at least two days. The city is very nice, it’s nice to stroll here during the day and sit in a cafe on the square in the evening :)

Lake Garda - beautiful region, located a short distance from major Italian cities. And today I will tell you about all the ways to get to this lake region. Direct trains run here from and Milan. And in Verona you can still take the bus.

I’ll start my story with Verona, since we left it ourselves, and there are the maximum number of types of transport from here, you can get to any city on the lake. But, when planning a trip, you need to understand which city you are going to. We drove from Verona to and from Verona, and I’ll tell you about that. And then we will talk about what kind of transport operates on the lake itself.

How to get to Lake Garda from Verona?

There are two ways to get from Verona to Lake Garda:

  1. By train to the Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione stops. How to buy a train ticket. I remind you once again that wherever you buy tickets (online, at the box office or from a machine), enter the name in Italian with all the prepositions. Only buses go to other cities. Trains depart from Verona's main railway station, Porta Nuova.
    • Cost (as of September 3, 2017):
      • The train to Peschiera del Garda takes 13 minutes and costs 3.40 euros per tourist. The fast train (Frecciarossa) takes 14 minutes and costs 15 euros.
      • The train to Desenzano del Garda takes 23 minutes and costs 4.45 euros per tourist. The fast train (Frecciarossa) takes 19 minutes and costs 15 euros.
  2. By bus. Oh, there are simply an impossible number of buses heading towards Lake Garda and it’s very difficult to figure it out. But we'll try)

Clue

The bus station and railway station of Verona have the same name - Porta Nuova, and are located in the same place. There are buses on the street, trains in the station building.

Clue

The current schedule should be viewed on the carrier’s website, in our case – www.atv.verona.it. BUT the schedule does not always clearly coincide with the real one. If not the schedule, then the bus number. What to do then?

You just need to be guided by this data, and not follow it exactly. Go to the station early, at least 30 minutes in advance, and find the stop you need. On each of them there is a bus schedule indicating the main stops. Then go buy your ticket.

Buying tickets in Italy is also not very simple. Take advantage of my experience, don't overpay.

Clue

Bus tickets can be bought at the ticket office (ATV office), from a machine (we didn’t find one at the station in Verona) and from the bus driver (the cost of tickets is automatically doubled).

Don't trust the diagrams next to the bus stops, there are no ticket offices there. Now only drug addicts gather there. You shouldn't look there)

The ATV ticket office is located in the station building. After the doors turn left, you need the second or third office. To a gloomy Italian you name the city and say the cherished “Two tickets on one way, please.” You can also find out the departure time of the nearest bus and the stop number. The bus number is printed directly on the ticket.

The cost of tickets depends on the distance of the journey. The longer you go, the more you pay. Tickets cost us 3.40 per person.

Ticket prices from Verona to Lake Garda

ZonesTime limit
T11,30 around the city
T22,00 75"
T32,80 90"
T43,40 105"
T54,00 120"
T6
4,60 135"
T75,20 150"
T85,80 160"

You need to go back using the same procedure - look for a bus stop or bus station, buy a ticket there and go back. When we arrived at the station in the town of Garda, the ATV office there was closed, but there was a machine nearby where you could pay by card. If everything turns out to be closed, you will have to buy a ticket from the driver at an inflated price.

How to get to Lake Garda from Venice?

For one day from Venice it is quite possible to go to Lake Garda. You need to take the train at the central station of Venice - Venezia S. Lucia, where you need to buy a ticket to the stations of Desenzano del Garda - Sirmione (Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione) or Peschiera del Garda.

  • The train to Desenzano del Garda takes 2 hours 9 minutes and costs 12.40 euros per tourist. The fast train (Frecciarossa) takes 1 hour 31 minutes and costs 33 euros.
  • To get to Peschiera del Garda you can only take a train like the Regionale Veloce, which has many stops. The cost will be the same, but it will only take a couple of minutes less time.

How to get to Lake Garda from Milan?

If you're looking to spice up your trip to Milan, you might as well take a day trip to Lake Garda. The train departs from Milano Centrale station.

  • The train to Desenzano del Garda takes 1 hour 22 minutes and costs 9.20 euros per tourist. The fast train (Frecciarossa) takes 51 minutes and costs 25 euros.
  • The train to Peschiera del Garda takes 1 hour 32 minutes and costs 10.50 euros per tourist. The fast train (Frecciarossa) takes 57 minutes and costs 25 euros.

Therefore, if you went on vacation to Venice and decided that you want to relax on Lake Garda, then it is better to go by fast train so that you have time to relax on the lake without running at breakneck speed. It would be better, of course, to stay there overnight, but if time is limited, then this is the best option.

Desenzano del Garda (Sirmione) or Peschiera del Garda: where to go?

So, you have decided that you want to go to Lake Garda from any city on one of your travel days. But where to go? To Desenzano del Garda or Peschiera del Garda?

My advice is to go to Desenzano and then take the bus to Sirmione (journey time is about 30 minutes depending on traffic). We were there, and were returning to Verona past Peschiera. Of course, I didn’t see the whole city, but it immediately becomes clear that this city is a transport hub, there are more cars here, more people and fewer tourists. People come here to get to Gardaland, the local amusement park. Plus the city itself is quite large.

In Sirmione, you will find an ancient fortress, narrow streets, Villa Catullus - Roman baths, as well as hot springs, white swans and giant lemons. A report on this city will be released soon.

Public transport on Lake Garda: schedule and cost

Now you find yourself on Lake Garda, but how to move between towns already in place? There are two ways to get here - by bus and by boat. The first way is faster and cheaper, but the second is much more atmospheric. By the way, in small towns it turned out to be very difficult to find a bus station. We were able to find it using Google maps and logic: we left the embankment, walked about 7 minutes deep into the city and found a crowd of people in a small square. We were very surprised, what is this? It turned out that a sign indicating bus routes was hung on a beam. But, in our understanding, there are no ordinary stops there. Don't miss it!

Finding a boat stop will not be difficult. Go out to the embankment and look for a pier with a ticket office. Here is the schedule and cost of travel on the boats. Of course, the further and longer the journey, the more expensive the ticket. Plus, there are express trains that travel faster, but also cost a little more.
