A must visit in Karlovy Vary. Attractions in Karlovy Vary - by tourist places and more

Karlovy Vary or Carlsbad is an amazing town, as if “overhanging” with its cute houses and openwork colonnades with springs mineral water over the picturesque Tepla River. Therefore, the main attractions of Karlovy Vary are precisely the places associated with local mineral waters that are simply fantastic in their healing properties - the Geyser Colonnade, the Mill Colonnade, the Castle Colonnade, the Market and Garden Colonnades. In general, the main attraction of Carlsbad is its amazing springs, but there is also a lot of interesting things!

For example. Grand Hotel PUPP or the Old Castle, the Moser and Jan Becher Museums, an art gallery and the famous theater... A lot of “interesting things” are located in the vicinity of the relatively small Karlovy Vary - Loket Castle is 15 kilometers away, Becov nad Teplou Castle is 25 kilometers away km, Svatosha Rocks and the famous beer restaurant “In the Rock”, where you can take beer baths and rejuvenate yourself by ten years...

1. Geyser colonnade

The main attraction of the city is the springs of mineral water with unique healing properties, and among them the most famous of them stands out - the Geyser spring, around which this colonnade was built in the middle of the last century. But this source has been known to people since the 16th century; they already used it then, not even knowing that the Geyser spews water from a two-kilometer depth, and its temperature is 72-73 degrees. In the promenade hall of the colonnade you can try water from separate fountains of different temperatures...

2. Mill colonnade

The mill colonnade is distinguished not only by its superb mineral water and the rich history of the source itself (and people have known it for more than 400 years!), but also by its remarkable architecture. The vaults of the large-scale structure are supported by 124 Corinthian columns, and the orchestra pit is decorated with sculptures by Vaclav Lokvenec. Above the balustrade of the gallery you can see 12 allegorical sculptures symbolizing the different seasons. The colonnade was built in late classicism in the mid-19th century.

However, most of the visitors rush here not for the beauty of lines and shapes, because there are 5 important Carlsbad springs at once - Melnichy (+56 °C), Rusalka (+60 °C), Libushe (+62 °C), Prince Wenceslas (+65/58 °C) and Skalny (+53 °C). Each of the springs has different characteristics and properties, but they are all very popular among holidaymakers...

3. Castle colonnade

The Castle Colonnade was erected in the most ancient place of Karlovy Vary near powerful rocky ledges and an ancient spa tower, but it is one of the youngest among the city’s colonnades; it was built in a wonderful Art Nouveau style at the beginning of the last century. One of the main highlights of the colonnade was the bas-relief “Spirit of the Springs” by sculptor Wenzel Heida, made of a rare mineral - argonite. Entry into the colonnade is only available to patients of the Castle Lazne hospital, so you will most likely only be able to admire this elegant masterpiece of the Viennese architect Johann Friedrich Ohman from the street...

4. Market Colonnade

The market colonnade was built in 1883, its appearance clearly reminiscent of the architectural style of the distant Swiss Alps. By the way, the landscape of Karlovy Vary with its picturesque hills is somewhat reminiscent of these Alps, so this elegant structure fits perfectly into the surrounding area. ..The building is a wooden building with columns, which are crowned with a gable roof; the façade of the colonnade was richly and generously decorated with carved decorative elements, which gave the building elegance and festivity.

Inside the colonnade there are two springs: the Market spring with a water temperature of about +62 degrees and the second, bearing the proud name of the Emperor and King of the Czech Republic Charles IV, and this is the oldest of all the wells discovered in Karlovy Vary. In addition, the Lower Castle Spring is connected to the Market Colonnade; its other outlet is accessible only to clients of the Castle Spa hospital and is located in the Castle Colonnade.

5. Garden colonnade

The Garden Colonnade is located in a picturesque garden named after the great Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who was very fond of Karlovy Vary. The colonnade is an openwork light structure that fits perfectly into the garden landscape and creates the impression of lightness and festivity. Water from the Garden Spring, which is very unusual for thermal waters, has a pleasant sourish taste, and its not very high temperature (about +47 ° C) is very comfortable for drinking. It goes without saying that this water, like that from other Karlovy Vary springs, has unique healing properties. In addition to the Garden Spring, in the colonnade, the Snake Spring (+30 °C, slightly less mineral, but rich in carbon dioxide) gushes from the snake’s mouth, and next to it there is a gazebo with the Source of Freedom (+60 °C).

6. Goethe Tower

If you want to admire the most picturesque panorama of Karlovy Vary, then welcome to the oldest and most interesting observation deck in the city - the Goethe Tower, from where Carlsbad will be at your fingertips. On the way, you will pass two more observation hills - Three Crosses and Otto Hill and, finally, you will come to this beautiful structure, built in 1889 on the initiative of Princess Stephanie, wife of Prince Rudolf of Habsburg.

The tower, where Johann-Wolfgang Goethe, who gave his name to it, loved to climb, is located on the Peak of Eternal Youth at an altitude of 668 meters. The climb there is not easy, and in order to climb to the top of the 42-meter tower itself, you need to climb another 165 steps, so count on your strength! But the view from here will reward all your efforts... By the way, in the tower there is also a wonderful restaurant serving Czech cuisine.

7. Church of St. Mary Magdalene

The construction of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene dates back to the 14th century, when the first Gothic church appeared near the Vřídlo spring. But numerous wars and fires did not spare the temple, and what we see now dates back to the second half of the 18th century; its light walls, high arches and the tops of the towers, which have acquired a noble greenish color, attract the gaze of every guest of the city.

Despite the destruction it experienced, in general the Church retains the style of the Renaissance. Painting and wood carving are widely used in the interior of the temple, and the sculptures of the church deserve special attention, in particular those dedicated to St. Mary herself. In the crypt of the cathedral lie the ashes of those who once lay in the church cemetery located near the temple. The Church has an excellent organ, concerts are held regularly, tickets can be purchased at the church before the concert or at Karlovy Vary information centers in advance.

8. Peter and Paul Church

The Peter and Paul Church, erected at the very end of the 19th century on the initiative of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, is located in one of the most beautiful places in Karlovy Vary, right at the foot of the mountains. The temple was erected according to the drawings of K.A. Ukhtomsky, and the supervision of the work was carried out by the architect Wiederman. When creating the project, the artist Konstantin Andreevich Ukhtomsky was most likely inspired by Russian churches of the 17th century: the architecture contains all the elements characteristic of the style of that period - a high porch, a covered gallery, intricate decoration of the facade...

It is worth paying attention to the lower part of the eastern wall of the church - the bas-relief depicts Peter the Great surrounded by masons. The image was taken in 1912, when the 200th anniversary of the Emperor's stay in Carlsbad was celebrated. The interior decoration is also interesting: stained glass windows depicting Jesus Christ, Saints John Chrysostom and Basil the Great, as well as the patrons of the Czech Republic - Saints Wenceslas and Lyudmila.

In the 17th century, Baroque began to dominate everywhere, so the tower of the castle, which burned down in 1604, was rebuilt in this style. Karlovy Vary (formerly Karlsbad) is a resort and hospital of breathtaking beauty and tranquility. Everything in the city is conducive to leisurely walks and relaxation of body and soul.

Many people go to Karlovy Vary just for a one-day excursion. But you and I will stay in the city for a few days and slowly taste all the delights of such a beautiful city, immersed in greenery and flowers.

There are not many attractions in Karlovy Vary, mostly all of them are located in the city center, which runs on both sides along the Tepla thermal river. Karlovy Vary, the town itself is small, its center can easily be explored on foot in one day, but it is better to allocate at least a couple of days to visit the city.

Green parks, colorful low houses, alleys and embankment, all this creates the impression of an eternal holiday. This feeling is further fueled by the enchanting bright architecture and the ever-beating hot Geyser.

So ,

Let's take a walk around Karlovy Vary and look at the main attractions of the city

The first thing that catches your eye when you arrive in Karlovy Vary and where it is very convenient to start a walk around the city is this small, immersed in greenery Flower Garden Park. In the center of the park there is a spa salon, which is also one of the most famous complexes of Karlovy Vary and a landmark of the city - Lazensky dum.

The spa buildings and the park are truly impressive, with shady alleys, flower beds filled with flowers, and a fountain at the main entrance to the building. The most interesting thing is that in the center of the park there is a flowerbed in which the calendar date is planted from fresh flowers. Every night the date from the flowers is changed to the current one.

The most beautiful architecture of buildings, a green embankment, squares and gardens, thermal springs in the colonnades and many different cafes and restaurants, you will find all this when you go for a walk further along the embankment along the Tepla River.

Not far from the Flower Garden Park, on Zahradni street, which translates from Czech as garden, is the largest in the city Absinthe museum-shop. Karlovy Vary is famous for its absinthe. A pleasant woman met us at the museum; she will willingly and free of charge take you around the small museum, tell you in detail about absinthe and its types, as well as accessories and the culture of drinking absinthe. For example, what is an absinthe spoon used for?

Before visiting this store, we had no idea that there was such a variety of different absinthes. This is no longer a museum, but just a store where the owner talks about the drink in the hope that you will buy something from her, but this is not at all necessary.

The store also sells hemp products: lollipops, cookies, chocolates. Naturally, there is no cannabis in these products; all this was done more for fun.

Opposite the store-museum, on the other side of Tepla, near the Termal Hotel, there is small area, perhaps, the main lively one in the city center. There are tents with souvenirs, cheeses, sweets and other street food on the square.

The famous Czech sweet Trdlo. Hot, very tasty.

They also sell famous Karlovy Vary waffles - platkas. In Karlovy Vary, payment cards can be found at every step. Hot ones taste best, but you can also buy them ready-made and packaged in boxes.

These waffles are made on the basis of Karlovy Vary mineral water and there are rumors around them that these waffles are very useful, but... read their composition and it will immediately become clear that there is no benefit in these waffles, there are so many preservatives, dyes and chemicals that thermal water is definitely not will help.

On the square, waffles are sold already prepared and packaged; for those who wish, they can be heated for an additional fee. But if you go for a walk along Masaryk Street/T.G. Masaryka, then in small shops you can buy freshly prepared waffles, and also see the whole cooking process. After all, they are prepared right before your eyes. And they are several times cheaper in these stores.

Near the square there are beautiful Dvorak Gardens/Dvorakovy sady. These green gardens feature benches for relaxation, sculptures and flower beds with fragrant flowers of all colors.

You definitely won’t miss the Dvorak Gardens, since this is where the most famous openwork cast-iron colonnade of Karlovy Vary is located - Garden colonnade/kolonada Sadoveho pramene. There are two thermal water springs in the garden colonnade.

In general, there are 12 thermal springs with mineral water in Karlovy Vary. All sources are located in four colonnades and two gazebos. The colonnades are also the main attractions of Karlovy Vary. Access to all colonnades and springs is daily, free and free.

In addition to the Garden Colonnade in the center of Karlovy Vary you will also find the Market Colonnade, the Mill Colonnade and the Geyser Colonnade.

Walking further along the embankment/Mlynske nabr. we will certainly get to Mill colonnade/Mlynska kolonada. This stone colonnade immediately catches your eye, because it is the longest of all the colonnades in the city. In the Mill Colonnade there are five mineral water springs with temperatures ranging from 53 to 65 degrees.

Near the mill colonnade you can see a huge four-meter statue of Emperor CharlesIV. The statue was erected as part of the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the birth of the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV.

To create the statue, soft wet sand mixed with silt was used, compressed in molds. Then the molds were dismantled and this statue was created using shovels and steam. Such statues are short-lived and last only a few months, and then only if there are no prolonged rainfalls. Therefore, when you arrive in Karlovy Vary, you are unlikely to see the statue of Charles IV at the Mill Colonnade.

Near the Mill Colonnade there is another one, Market Colonnade/Trzni Kolonada - a wooden carved colonnade, built in the Swiss style, is one of the most beautiful colonnades in the city.

Previously, there was another one at the Market Colonnade, Castle Colonnade. This colonnade has been converted into a spa, so there is no free access to it. But it doesn’t matter, there were two springs in the colonnade - the Upper Castle Thermal Spring with a water temperature of 49.3 degrees and the Lower Castle Spring with a water temperature of 55 degrees. The lower castle spring leads out into the Market Colonnade, and the upper into the gazebo next to the salon.

Upper Castle Spring- gazebo

Near the Market Colonnade there is a small but pleasant square, in the center of which there is a beautiful monument

Directly opposite the Market Colonnade is the fourth and final one - Geyser colonnade/Vridelni kolonada. This is the newest and covered colonnade, made of glass and reinforced concrete. Open daily from 06:00 to 19:00, admission is free.

At the main entrance to the Geyser Colonnade, thermal water, equipped with Geyser fountain. Hence the name of the colonnade at the fountain.

Behind the geyser colonnade, in the very heart of Karlovy Vary, stands the majestic Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene/Kostel svate Mari Magdaleny.

Not far from the Church of St. Mary, on the same side of the Tepla River, there is one of the most attractive buildings of Karlovy Vary - and the one of the same name Theater Square near the theater.

The luxurious theater building was built in a neo-baroque style, blending so harmoniously into the city architecture and landscape. The theater attracts the attention of all tourists and is an invariable decoration and one of the symbols of the Karlovy Vary resort, which is often depicted on local postcards and souvenirs.

Steam from hot thermal waters emanates from the Tepla River, because everything thermal waters fall straight into the river, and you, walking along this river, inhale the beneficial vapors of mineral water, sometimes you even feel dizzy))

Fountains flow from the center of the river

There are many cafes and shops along the way

Horse-drawn carriages peacefully waiting for their passengers

There is an interesting painting on the ground among the tiles - "Sounding Dances". You can jump on the squares and listen to the ringing of bells.

So we came to another famous attraction of Karlovy Vary, and oddly enough, this attraction is another hotel - Grandhotel Pupp/Grandhotel Pupp . This is the most famous and comfortable hotel in Karlovy Vary, where tourists and stars from all over the world love to stay. You too can stay at this famous hotel!
