History of the park

Until the 19th century, under King Matthias, the site of the current park was covered with swamps and forests. And only at the end of the century, under the reign of Maria Theresa, an order was given to ennoble this place: drain the waters and plant trees.

Since initially this square was located outside the city, and it was difficult to get to Városliget, especially in honor of the 1000th anniversary of Hungary, the city authorities decided to build an underground road to make it easier for people to get to the park from the central part of the capital. This underground passage became the very first metro line not only in Hungary, but throughout Europe. Today Budapest has four metro lines, but it is the very first line of the M1 that locals call the “underground road”.

After the celebration, it was decided to begin transforming and expanding the park.

Varosliget Park is so large that it boasts a colossal number of trees planted on its territory. And this is no less than 7,000 trees, among which there are ancient and exotic species. Even during the time of Maria Theresa, by her decree, artificial canals and reservoirs were created, which have survived to this day. Its founder is considered to be the gardener Henrik Nebbin, who, by order of Emperor Franz Joseph I, began landscaping work here.

The park contains the only botanical garden in Europe for the blind, who can learn the names of plants using special signs located throughout the garden.

Ignaz Alpar made the park popular; its feature was the combination into one whole of 21 fragments of various buildings (palaces, castles, cathedrals), built in different styles and at different times. The main condition was that all of them, one way or another, played a role in the formation of the Hungarian state.
