In the mid-80s of the last century, Soviet passenger aircraft began to look outdated compared to the latest Western airliners. The gap did not look hopeless; it could still be overcome. Almost all leading design bureaus already had projects for new generation aircraft, which were supposed to replace the honored “aviation veterans” on internal and external lines. Unfortunately, after a few years, little remained of these plans.

In the 90s, the Russian aviation industry degraded. Airplanes were literally produced piece by piece, factories were turned into warehouses for Turkish and Chinese consumer goods, and foreign “investors,” happily rubbing their hands, took away design and technological documentation. In addition, the demand for domestic flights has fallen sharply: in the first two years of the “reforms” alone, the number of passengers decreased fourfold. Under these conditions, one could not even dream of reviving the aviation industry.

The Sukhoi Corporation, unlike many other aircraft manufacturing companies, survived the “wild 90s” relatively well, mainly due to the sale of fighter aircraft to various countries around the world. In 2000, the management of this company first raised the question of diversifying production and creating an airliner for transporting people over short or medium ranges.

This initiative was supported by the new top political leadership of Russia, which was determined to put an end to the total collapse of industry. However, from the very beginning it was clear that the newly created Sukhoi Civil Aircraft company would not be able to cope with the project alone. The development of engines was entrusted to the French company Snecma; a significant part of the instrumentation was created by specialists from the S.V. Aviation Complex. Ilyushin, and to successfully promote the aircraft on the world market, assistance was used from the American concern Boeing.

The project, created by engineers from the Sukhoi Corporation, was recognized in 2003 by representatives of Rosaviakosmos as worthy of government funding. Then the future aircraft was called RRJ (Russian Regional Jet). At the same time, other projects of short-haul airliners were also considered, including the Tu-414 developed by the Tupolev company, however, the victory remained with Sukhoi.

It was decided to organize the assembly of new aircraft in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, where the necessary production lines were prepared for this. The official display of a prototype airliner, renamed SSJ100, that is, Sukhoi Superjet 100, was held at the end of September 2007. Eight months later, the first flight of the new Sukhoi took place, and a year later this regional aircraft was shown in Le Bourget during the annual aviation show.

The first buyer of this aircraft was Armavia, registered in Armenia. It received the SSJ100 airliner in April 2011, and from that moment the commercial operation of the Superjet began. Aeroflot remains the largest customer.

As of July 2020, more than 190 SSJ aircraft have been built, however, not all of them are in use: according to various sources, no more than 116 operate regular flights. There are also a number of unclosed contracts for the supply of aircraft.

Description of the aircraft design

In terms of its aerodynamic design, the SSJ airliner is not original: a single-fin empennage with “lower” placement of the elevators, a swept wing with two engines mounted underneath it. This gives the aircraft a rather “typical” appearance. True, the SSJ does not have the wingtips characteristic of Airbuses, but in the future, it is expected that these design elements will appear on it as well.

The aircraft is controlled using a “sidestick” - a side stick that replaces the traditional steering wheel. The pilots are assisted by two on-board computers, which, as originally thought, could not fail at the same time.

Composite materials are used in aircraft construction, but to a rather limited extent. Fairings are made from them, as well as a number of wing mechanization elements.

Description of the interior layout

The internal layout of the Sukhoi SSJ100 airliner may seem unusual to many passengers, especially those who have never flown on short-haul aircraft. This leads to constant SSJ downtime and low flight hours.

There are other shortcomings:

  1. Excessively high share of imported components. This has already led to the failure of a contract for the supply of aircraft to Iran, since the United States simply refused to supply the necessary structural elements;
  2. General unreliability of many auxiliary systems and devices. Frequent breakdowns, even if they do not affect flight safety, have become a real curse of this airliner;
  3. Insufficient engine life. It turned out to be several times lower than stated, which caused a lot of criticism from airlines that had already purchased Superjets.

Currently, the developers of the SSJ-100 are trying to correct the most significant shortcomings of the machine, however, it is not yet clear how long this process will take.

Flight safety

Of the 191 SSJ100 aircraft, three were lost in accidents. In two cases this resulted in significant loss of life. The first disaster occurred on May 9, 2012, when the airliner, performing a demonstration flight, crashed into a mountain. All 45 people on board were killed.

The second tragedy received the widest media coverage. On May 5, 2020, the Sukhoi Superjet, which took off from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, was forced to return back after the simultaneous failure of both on-board computers. The rough landing led to a fire that killed more than half the passengers (41 out of 78) and completely destroyed the plane itself.

The incident at Sheremetyevo caused enormous damage to the image of the SSJ100, which was already not ideal. Despite the fact that the culprit of the disaster was apparently the aircraft commander, many experts were extremely unhappy with the failure of the on-board electronics, which were not sufficiently protected from the effects of atmospheric electricity.

Countless minor breakdowns of the aircraft’s engines and auxiliary systems, which have become a constant occurrence over the years of Superjet operation, also do not contribute to safety.

Main modifications of the aircraft

Already during the design work, it was envisaged that the SSJ100 would be produced in various versions, involving some changes in the main performance characteristics of the airliner. In total, no less than eight different modifications were designed, the most promising of which are two - Sukhoi Superjet 100 95 LR and 100 95 SV.

Operation of this variant of the aircraft began in March 2014. Its main difference from the basic version is the increased flight range, which has been increased to 4576 km. This was achieved through the installation of more economical engines. At the same time, the fuel supply remained the same, but the take-off weight increased slightly, which affected the vehicle’s range. Other characteristics have been preserved.

Sukhoi Superjet-100-95SV

This modification of the Superjet should significantly change the appearance of the aircraft, since it is expected to increase the length of the fuselage and the wing area. This will increase the number of passengers on board to 125, and the take-off weight will increase by 10 tons. There is still little information about steps for the practical implementation of this project, although initial plans included the start of commercial operation in 2020.

Whatever the further development of the Superjet, we can already say today that it has played a certain positive role. Thanks to the work on creating this airliner, Russian designers and production workers gained significant experience in designing modern passenger aircraft. In conditions of almost complete loss of Soviet developments, this is very valuable. The difficult fate of the SSJ-100, in addition, can serve as a good lesson for the country’s political leadership, because it once again shows how easy it is to destroy and how difficult it is to restore the civil aircraft industry.
