Vvedensky Church in Veshnyaki schedule of services. Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki

The Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki is closely connected with the history of the Sheremetev boyar family. It was a representative of this family - Fyodor Ivanovich Sheremetev - who erected it in 1644-1646. by vow (promise before God) with the permission of Patriarch Joseph on the lands of the former Veshnyakovo wasteland that belonged to him in honor of the Resurrection of Christ. It was a stone building in the Donikon style, which had 2 floors and was crowned with a tent. He was surrounded by walks of life ( open galleries), connecting with a high hipped bell tower. The lower one was built in the basement - Uspeniya Holy Mother of God, by which it is still called today. There was also a chapel of the most revered saint in Rus' - Nicholas, Myra of Lycia (the city where the saint was a bishop during his lifetime) the Wonderworker.

Subsequently, the temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the heirs of the Sheremetev family - the Odoevskys and Cherkasyskys. In 1656, Prince Nikita Odoevsky bricked the upper walkway, adding 2 chapels, into one of which (the right one) an altar was placed in honor of St. Nicholas, and the other (the left one) was consecrated in the name of St. Apostle James, the heavenly patron of the grandson of F.I. Sheremetev, who “reposed in Bose” in 1650 in the monastic rank (with the name Theodosius). They wanted to complete the side-chapels with tents, but Nikon, who had ascended to the patriarchal throne by that time and was personally supervising the construction of churches, ordered the heads of the side-chapels to be installed round (the Lord really did not like tents). And so it turned out that the tented main temple was surrounded by round onions of side buildings.

In 1732-1734. Another heir of the Sheremetevs, the imperial chancellor Prince Alexei Mikhailovich Cherkassky, began significant reconstruction of the temple. He decided to change it in the then fashionable European Baroque style. They managed to greatly modify the bell tower, but that was where the prince’s ardor died down.

In 1743, Veshnyakovo again returned to the ownership of the Sheremetevs directly.

and churchyard

In 1759, instead of a tent, a tall thin spire appeared over the bell tower and no further reconstructions were made on it, while the temple itself was restored and expanded many times. It survived the French attack, was reconsecrated in 1838, expanded in 1867, and renovated at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In 1922 it did not pass XFrame of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki confiscation of church valuables (in other words, direct robbery, covered with noble slogans), but it was one of the last to be closed in Moscow - in 1940. Parishioners from the neighboring villages of Vykhino and Nizovka slowly dismantled some of the church property from home (they even took away the Royal Doors that covered the entrance to the altar).

Lower (Assumption) Church inside

However, the inaction was short-lived from a historical point of view. Already in 1947, the Assumption Church in Veshnyaki again opened its doors to believers. This happened on January 25 - the day of remembrance of the Great Martyr Tatiana, the patroness of students, in whose honor the church has a portable altar in the lower (Assumption) church.

People began to return saved icons. After much persuasion, the Royal Doors were also returned to their rightful place. Unfortunately, some of the icons, those that were not dismantled by the residents, were kept in the bell tower for a long time and were practically destroyed by dampness. But others returned to the iconostasis after restoration. The frescoes of the temple, painted in the 18th-19th centuries, have also been preserved.

Temple tent and
bell tower spire

In 1951, the bell tower received a new completion in the form of a bowl with a spire at the end.

Today, the main altar of the upper church in the Veshnyakovskaya Church is consecrated in honor of the Resurrection of the Word, its 2 chapels are in the name of St. Nicholas and the prophet Elijah, there is also a portable throne in honor of the apostle. Jacob Zavedeev. The lower church is dedicated to the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, its left chapel in the side gallery is St. Sergius of Radonezh, attached - military service. Tatiana.

Church house

The church has many shrines and especially revered icons (some are letters from the 17th century). Among them, the icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost,” which was self-renewed (enlightened) right before people’s eyes, the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, once saved from the German invaders from near Smolensk, the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands, famous for the miracle of healing, the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God. Not long ago, a rather rare image of the Savior “Carrying the Cross” was donated to the temple.

Cover of the magazine “Holy Spring”

IN tsarist times This temple was repeatedly visited by crowned heads, including Catherine the Great and Alexander III. In 2003, during the celebration of the anniversary of the House of Romanov, a thanksgiving prayer service was served in honor of this family, which was attended by the leaders of the Russian Assembly of Nobility.

I would like to add that the church is currently doing a lot of work with young people, for which the “Veishnyakovskaya squad” has been organized, assistance is provided to drug addicts, which is provided by the “Inspiration” group, the parishioners of the temple are united by a community of mercy, helping all those in need. There is a Sunday school, a publication for children “Orthodox Ray” and the magazine “Holy Spring” are published.

Every Orthodox Christian has his own special place where he feels good and where he can come and pray in silence. Ask God for help. Forgive enemies and foes. And touch some kind of “holiness”. A place after visiting which it becomes easier for you to experience some life problems. It makes my soul feel better. Personally for me such a place in Moscow is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki.

It is in this temple that I go to pray, despite the fact that I moved from Ryazansky Prospekt a long time ago. I hope you enjoy the photo walk around the temple and its surroundings. I waited almost two years for permission to take a photo in it...

There are persistent rumors that this temple was anything for the famous actor and athlete Turchinsky...

Next to the temple there is a church shop where you can order the necessary services. And buy icons.

There are necessary extensions near the temple

The Assumption Church is surrounded by the old parish cemetery, where residents of nearby villages are buried - Kuskovo, Veshnyakovo, Vykhino, Vyazovka, as well as those who settled here later, when in connection with the construction of the Ryazan direction in 1880 railway the village is gradually turning into a large suburban village of Veshnyaki

Quite an interesting cross

At the entrance to the temple territory, all upcoming services are described in detail.

The Assumption Church is located on the territory of the ancient Veshnyakovo estate, first mentioned in chronicles of the 16th century. Like neighboring Kuskovo, Veshnyakovo is associated with the Sheremetev family.

The Assumption Church was built by Fyodor Ivanovich Sheremetev in 1644-1646 according to a vow. During these years, F.I. Sheremetev occupied one of the key positions in the Russian government. In 1646 he resigned, and in 1649 he accepted the monastic rank at the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and was tonsured as Theodosius.

Above the entrance to the temple...

It’s a little dark inside the temple - but this is precisely what makes it possible to feel the special atmosphere of this place

In this temple, almost all candles (as you noticed) are placed in sand.

Previously, the Temple stood on a high basement, surrounded on three sides by a gallery, originally open. Instead of a dome, the temple building ended with a tent. A few years after the completion of the main construction, it was decided to add symmetrical side-chapels to the temple, also topped with tents. In 1655, Patriarch Nikon, who was approached for permission to build, noted in the church document that “... the heads on those side-altars were round, not pointed.” Patriarch Nikon was an opponent of tented churches and ordered the construction of new churches “with one, three, five chapters, and not to build tented churches at all.” At the end of the 17th century, a bell tower was added to the temple; in 1734 it was built on and topped with a spire.

During the more than 300-year history of the Assumption Church, it was restored several times inside and out. During the last restoration, nine layers of ocher and three layers of oil were discovered on one section of the outer wall. Among the colors in which the temple was painted are burgundy, red, emerald, dark and light yellow.

On May 22, 1922, the Bolsheviks removed many church valuables from the temple, including precious cups, vessels, tabernacle, altar crosses and the Gospel. The Assumption Church was closed on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, in 1940.

During the war years, the temple building was equipped with a military warehouse and repair shops. On January 25, 1947, services were resumed in the temple. Despite all the difficulties, it was possible to preserve some of the church valuables, including ancient icons.

Some of the icons were badly damaged by dampness and temperature changes, as they had previously been kept in the bell tower. After the reconstruction, the cold upper temple becomes warm and wintery. In 1951, a bowl with a spire was installed on the repaired bell tower.

A special place to pray for the departed.

May God give us strength to overcome this path...

I hope you liked the material - and you will find the strength to go on a weekend to the church closest to you (if you are Orthodox) and pray for peace, family and your loved ones!
Have a nice weekend friends!

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary into the Temple is one of the great church holidays

Tradition

As ancient church tradition says, the parents of the Virgin Mary, the righteous Joachim and Anna, praying for the resolution of infertility, made a vow: if a child is born, they will dedicate him to God.

When the Blessed Virgin was three years old, the holy parents decided to fulfill their promise. Having gathered relatives and friends, dressing the Most Pure Mary in her best clothes, singing sacred psalms and holding candles in her hands, they brought her to the Jerusalem Temple.

The entrance to it was a platform. There were 15 massive steps leading up to it. Joachim and Anna put the Maiden first. She overcame the remaining 14 herself, strengthened by the invisible power of God.

This ascent, accessible only to adults, surprised everyone present and, especially, Bishop Zacharias (father of John the Baptist). He took Saint Mary by the hand and led Her, at the inspiration of God, to the Holy of Holies (inner altar) and there indicated a place for prayer.

According to tradition, the virgins prayed between the church and the altar. And only one Virgin Mary was allowed by Zechariah to enter the inner altar at any time.

According to church tradition, during her stay in the Jerusalem Temple, Saint Mary was raised together with other pious virgins, studied the Holy Scriptures, did handicrafts and constantly prayed. Demetrius of Rostov cites the story of Gregory of Nicodemus about the visit of Mary by an Angel: “She was in communion with the Angels. Zechariah learned this too; for when, according to priestly custom, he was at the altar, he saw that someone of an extraordinary appearance was talking with the Virgin and serving Her food. It was an Angel who appeared; and Zechariah was surprised, thinking to himself: what is this new and extraordinary phenomenon?

It is believed that Mary remained in the Temple until she was twelve years old, when she was betrothed to St. Joseph.

Icon

The center of the composition is the figure of Mary, who is depicted much smaller than the others. At the same time, She is dressed in maforiya - the traditional clothing of married women. Her parents are depicted next to the Virgin, bringing their Daughter to the temple. Behind them may be a procession of virgins who accompanied Mary on the road from Nazareth to Jerusalem.

In the temple, symbolically depicted as a ciborium, the priest Zechariah meets the Virgin. According to the story of the legend, the staircase is depicted along which three-year-old Mary independently entered the Temple. Additionally, there may be an image of the Virgin Mary being fed by an Angel in the temple. On icons this composition is depicted as a separate mark.

Story

Tradition dates the establishment of this holiday to the first centuries of Christianity and tells that Empress Helena erected a temple in honor of the Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The holiday became widespread only in the 9th century. And until the XIVth he was not among the Twelve.

The Feast of the Introduction falls at the beginning of the Nativity Fast. It is from this festive service that Christmas carols begin to sound in the church, preparing worshipers for a joyful meeting with the Infant Christ.

One of the oldest Moscow churches dedicated to the Mother of God is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki. Veshnyakovo is a place known since the 16th century; it is these places that are associated with the name of the famous Russian statesman - Fyodor Ivanovich Sheremetyev, who founded the Assumption Church here in 1644.

History of construction

The Mother of God has always been especially revered in both Orthodox Christianity and Catholic Christianity. For a woman she is the first intercessor, for a mother she is an assistant. She, the Blessed Virgin, is offered prayers by those who desperately need help and peace of mind. This is probably why there are so many churches dedicated to the Mother of God in Russia.

It is known that Fyodor Ivanovich Sheremetyev, having a high position in the government, made a vow in the middle of the 17th century, according to which the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built. With the start of construction, Sheremetyev refused his honorary position and soon took monastic vows and a new name - Theodosius.

From that time until the end of his days, his main task was to take care of the temple. By the beginning of 1734, the construction of the temple was completed, and for a long time the temple did not need restoration.

However, during the Soviet period, like most churches, the temple was looted by the Bolsheviks. And, despite the fact that in the temple before last day services were held, in 1940, on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, the church building, by decision of the authorities, was transferred to workshops and military warehouses. Only 2 years after the victory of our troops in the war, in 1947, services were resumed in the Assumption Church.

Moreover, thanks local residents During the difficult years for the church, the main relics of the cathedral - 3 ancient icons - were also saved.

Current state

The building of the temple, founded in the 17th century, has survived to this day, however, it is constantly in need of repair and reconstruction. So, at the beginning of the two thousandth, the restoration of the temple began, during this period the foundation was strengthened, the roof was covered with copper and all the temple paintings were restored. New bells were made.

Interior of the lower Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

More recently, in 2014, a frame made of pearls and precious stones was made for the icon of the Mother of God.

Description

Over its 300-year history, the temple was restored several times both inside and outside. During such work, as many as 9 layers of different colors of paint were discovered under the top layer of paint on the external walls, which gives rise to the assumption that at different times the church was painted in emerald, burgundy and many other colors.

The greatness of the Assumption Cathedral is emphasized by its architectural features- it is built in two aisles, and the third tier is crowned by a bell tower.

The interior of the cathedral is represented by frescoes painted in the 19th century.

Activities of the parish

Currently, services are held in the temple, and much attention is also paid to social activities. Ministers and volunteers from the parishioners of the temple work to rehabilitate people addicted to alcohol and drugs, helping them, through faith in the Lord, to come to a clean, addiction-free life.

There is also a Sunday school for children and a youth club at the temple.

Shrines

Among the shrines revered in the temple, the icon-painted image of the Savior Not Made by Hands is famous; parishioners of the temple leave the most candles at this icon. It is believed that this image, after prayer, heals from serious illnesses.

Among other revered icons of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary are:

  • icon “Assurance of Thomas”;
  • Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God;
  • icon “Recovery of the Lost”;
  • Iveron Icon of the Mother of God;
